Terrierman Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 He does get Lucky Once in a while PB290035 (800x600).jpg Thanks Goodness you got those boys some equipment, they were stuck with a willow limb and baler twine while you fished a Clarus... LOL Good going Terrierman The younger one of the two fished all year with a rod with the tip broken off, wouldn't even go to the trouble of putting a new guide on it. And caught plenty of fish that way too. I just couldn't handle it any longer. Those two really loaded the boat when we were down 12/29 and 12/30. Next time see if there is anyway you can photo shop out that guy in the front of the boat.
hoglaw Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 Forgot about this thread. Caught lots of fish this summer and fall. The creek is tough to navigate. I've turtled my Coosa twice and lost one of my favorite rods and reels. Dove looking for it until my lips turned blue and I couldn't handle it anymore. I'll probably find it in a log jam this spring. A few portages and a few bad log jams. Not sure how they'll look in the spring. We did as much swimming as anything. We've got a great spot to just sit in the creek and chill out. Anyway, I fished a hula grub most of the year. It's tough to beat. My wife caught the two best fish out of the creek this year, an 18" and one that was just a little smaller. You can't get the hula grub off of her rod. I had a bunch of good ones, but no 18's. Some friends use baby brush hogs with light spinning gear. I feel like they get more small fish attention than the hula grub does. I did do quite a bit of light tackle fishing. Not quite ultra-light though. One of my favorites has been a robo worm wacky-hooked on one of those high dollar flick-shake heads. I caught a lot of fish out there this year. Haven't fished the creek since October and don't plan to until March or so. I like the cold floating, but with as many times as you have to get out and as many tight turns in heavy current as there are, I'm going to wait for warmer weather. I didn't do as much floating as I'd have liked because my access wasn't that great, but I've got that worked out. Have a nice trail down now. It's a very short walk, but still kind of steep. It's tough taking out there, but completely do-able. Easier to put in at the house and float down. But I've got about a 4 mile float either way - to the house or from the house. Can't freaking wait for longer days and warmer water.
Guest Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I saw somebody putting a kayak in the West Fork this morning. It was 20 degrees! WTH are they thinking?
Ham Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 they're thinking they don't want to live to see Feb Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
West Fork Jason Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 When I'm not flailing around with the long rod fishing poppers, I like my St. Croix medium light with a Lew's speed spin for smaller presentations. (not bottom bouncing football jigs with crawdads...) A non-weighted mini zoom fluke was my go to last year, nice slow twitches. Ham 1 http://www.WestForkJason.com
Ham Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 WFJ, I got some tips for you my Man. I got something that would crush them and be easy for guided clients to fish. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
West Fork Jason Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 What's up Ham! I love them flukes and how they move..... Un-weighted with the hook point up, they are pretty snag free in the rocks and current for most folks. Pretty darn deadly in the slow water too. http://www.WestForkJason.com
hoglaw Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 I've had at least two trips I can remember where I thought "we had a good day but didn't get that big one," then had the biggest one of the trip inhale a fluke within signt of the take-out. I think one was on crooked and one was on the kings. So when folks ask me when I use a fluke for smallie streams, I always say "when I can see the truck!" No doubt flukes are awesome. A hula grub will probably always be my go-to, even over the Ned (blasphemy?). But when the big ones get after the flukes...I like that a lot.
Ham Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Yep blasphemy and a BAD idea as well. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Jim Elam Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Anybody using braid on ultralight? My only ultralight rod and reel, mainly used for crappie fishing on the rare occasion I do so, has 8 lb. test (1 lb. diameter) Power Pro. Seems to work quite well. Have 8 lb spider wire with 6 lb floro leader on a light spin rig and it works really well. Handles fish up to 5 lbs so far, hopefully we can test it out on larger this spring! Fenwick's 6'9" 2 pc river runner rod and a Pfleuger President 2500 size get along well with this set up. Just be careful when you fill the spool. Any tendency to overfill will be rewarded with line tangles. Jim "The obsessions of others are opaque to the unobsessed, and thus easy to mock...If we are lucky we all have at least one."
