Quillback Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Yesterday the Monarchs were on the move, crossing the White river channel near point 23. Not a continuous stream, but you could usually spot 2 or 3 heading south if you looked around. They were flying right into about a 10 MPH wind. I idled the boat beside one to see how fast they were going into that wind - about 2.5 MPH. Pretty amazing a creature that fragile can make the trip from here (and from parts further north) to Mexico.
lee G. Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Been watching them my self, just wish there were the numbers i remember as a youngster!
podum Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I was at Smithville Lake, just north of KC on Saturday morning fishing for white bass. It was cold and windy. While walking the 1/2 mile back to the truck I went through a grove of trees that blocked the wind and saw butterflies. Looked up and there were 50-100 Monarchs above me but below the tree tops, just staying out of the wind and cold. It was surreal. Never seen anything like it. I sat there for 20 minutes. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
Greasy B Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I seen several working their way a cross Meramec river Sunday. The plight of the Monarch and the role Monsanto is playing in their demise is troubling. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974
Justin Spencer Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Several met the windshield heading up hwy 13 the other day. Njardar Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I was surprised to see several in Wisconsin today...I guess they didn't get the migration memo. They were going to town on whatever they could find, but that will be over with the frost tonight. Sad. Maybe they are to old to migrate.
fishinwrench Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Haven't noticed as single one around here yet. Kinda odd because our Mimosa's are usually full of them before the leaves ever start turning.
skeeter Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Amazing annual journey by a seemingly fragile insect. Banding efforts have proven that the annual Southwesterly bound Monarchs are the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th generation offspring of the Springtime Northbound migrators. Some kind of little understood genetically transmitted memory tells the descendants where and when to head to Mexico for Wintering. I hope their numbers rebound as I've read where the numbers of Monarchs in the small area they stay for Wintertime was only 10% of normal last year.
