kjackson Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 Got it, Zarra, thanks for the heads-up. Now if I can find some big waterdogs after the smallies spawn, I'll be set. Actually, I probably won't use live bait except as a last resort, but it is tempting.
Guest Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 If you want to catch a 7lb smallie, you will be better off going to a different lake, IMO There are many lakes in Oklahoma with 7lb smallies, not so much in NW Arkansas. just my 2 cents
zarraspook Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 FYI.... The Missouri State record for Smallmouth 7lbs 2oz caught on 12/18/1994 on Stockton !! The guy was fishing out of a 12' Jon boat in front of the dam, with CRICKETS for bluegill ......... "Look up OPTIMIST in the dictionary - there is a picture of a fishing boat being launched"
Sprint21fter Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 4lbs is a good one, there are a bunch of 5lbers around the dam area. Wouldn't suprise me that a 6 will be caught in the near future. Light line off of flats with baseball sized rock. Find the depth they are holding and run that depth.
jay bird Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 We had this one by the dam on top water. Really skinny but a little over 20 inches if I remember right.
Gavin Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Nice fish gents! I'd give you 20 on both. Weights vary, but inches don't. I'll go 3.5 for an 18", at 4 for a 20", and 5 for 22" out of an Ozark River. Lake fish seem to run a tad heavier. If over 23" I want to see the measuring device. World Record was reported as 27" long or so...Think those days on Dale Hollow are long gone though.
Members crkoester Posted February 3, 2015 Members Posted February 3, 2015 Anything over 4# is a big smallie on Beaver. I live on the lake, and I'm pretty dialed into them at certain times of the year... I catch a fair number of 3+ pounders, but I've only caught 4 of them over 4 pounds. Biggest ever was right at 4.5#. The size and numbers seem to continue to trend upward over the years.
Members JohnW Posted February 3, 2015 Members Posted February 3, 2015 Hey everyone - New to posting on here but I have really gotten a lot out of all of the tips, reports, and pictures on the forum. My wife caught this one early this fall off the riprap on the east side of the Hwy 12 bridge. Don't recall the measurement but we've caught several good ones off rocky spots in that area.
Flysmallie Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Good luck on your quest. No matter what it will be a good time. I'm surprised that the MO record smallmouth hasn't fallen. I bet there is one in the depths of TR that would smash that record and I've seen a monster smallmouth that would certainly exceed that on Stockton.
