garyw Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 This is still in the VERY VERY early stages. My wife and I MIGHT be moving to the Gravois Mills area if we can find a place we like. it would be late this year or next. Question is, is that area of the lake quiet (no monster boat types)? Fishing ok up there? we're both retired and need to get out of this house anyway (problem with stairs), so maybe finish our time at the lake. Not ready to talk to a realtor yet. Thanks for any response. Reel Monkey 1
WeekendWarrior Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 You will never get totally away from big boat traffic,it can be terrible but not to bad during the week especially after kids back to school. The problem with a lot of the housing is they are summer homes and not conducive to full time living with steep driveways and roads getting to your home in winter time. Be prepared to look at a bunch of junk, it will take time to find what is right.
fishinwrench Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Life in "Gravi" ain't for everybody but it does tend to grow on ya. Most folks land here for various reasons and just kinda get stuck. The fishing is good but not really any better than other arms of the lake. Far from quiet during the Summer thanks to a growing number of party spots, there is certainly no shortage of loud oversized watercraft. And sadly there is not a single bank you'd consider picturesque in the entire Gravois arm. Homes along the shoreline range from Plain to downright Ugly in most areas, with houses built so close together that folks are able to smell what the neighbor is cooking for dinner. The wildlife is mostly half-tame,inbred and retarded, resulting in more deer/turkey/squirrels/ect being killed with vehicles than rifles and shotguns. The roads suck, and the lawmen treat everyone as if they are fresh out of prison.....So if by chance you ARE then you definitely won't feel "picked on or discriminated against". If your wife likes to shop then be sure to keep plenty of gas in her car and a fist full of 5 dollar bills in the console for the Toll bridge cuz you can't buy anything here but tater chips, cigarettes, and day old bread. And no we don't even have a decent tackle shop. Wow, responding to this post has really been a dose of reality for me. If you decide to buy a place in Gravi I think I have one for sale. rondo 1
Old plug Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 in my area we have many nice home both small and large. How much can you pay and what about your monthly expenses. I live on Ceder Point point about 200 yards from where that kid drowned. It can be very ruff down here on the weekends. You might want to look for a place back in some of the coves. If your figuring on retiring. Its is a good place for that. They are well on their way to installing sewers on this side of the lake. But they will cost you a mandantory $60 bucks. a month year round. There is a awful lot for you to consider when buying a home out here. A condo might be better for you. By the way when you talk about Gravois Mills your talking about a area extending all the way down to Laurie. Gravois Mills is a very poverty ridden area. The little tiny town of Lurie is one of the best small towns around this lake. Weekendwarroir in is right about the roads in places.
garyw Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 wow, thanks guys. maybe we should expand our looking.

My grandparents' place has been my home away from home for my entire life, just a 15 minute drive north of Laurie on O-road at 7mm. Oldplug's right, Laurie is a gem of a little town and there's nowhere I'd rather be year round at the lake. The G2M has all the food and booze you could ever need, and Bryant's Osage Outdoors is the best bait and tackle shop you'll ever visit. Some pretty good dining options in Laurie as well. If it was my money I'd be looking waterfront around the vicinity of Laurie.

fishinwrench Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 hey fishinwrench.....don't sugarcoat it, tell him how you really feel Oh that's not how I feel, that's the reality that a person has to suppress in order to cope around here. Conorsix is right about Bryant's though (kinda). Good folks and conversation can be found there for sure, but unless your shopping list consists of nothing more than some postage stamps, jigheads and a decorative candle you will be doing additional traveling, I guarantee it. And yeah, G2M has beer.
Old plug Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 So does the Elks Lodge have beer. its cheaper. That lodge has are very large bar, two walk in coolers and a walk in freezer. If you happen to be a Elk its a place to go. For a little town of around 700-800 it will outshine just about any lodge in the state. Selected as National lodge winner 6 times. I totally agree with Wrench about the law enforcement. The patrolman that was patrolman that was involved in the big drowning here atarted out in the Laurie police Dept. and the Morgan County sherif is to be avoided like a plague. As far as Bryant's goes, It is a quality place ( your wife will love shopping in there) to visit designed a lot like Pro Bass on the inside. But like wrench said they do not carry a whole lot of fishing things except high end Rods and Reels. Ed services all rods and reels. And I am certain your best shot at getting something like that repaired if you need to. You can alao get custom lure painting done there. I understand the stock thing. All the shops around the lake are caught in that vise. That is because they cannot compete with the volumn purchase price of the Wallmart stores in Camdenton,Osage beach and Versailles.

Joking aside, like Oldplug I rely on TW for the majority of my tackle needs but Bryant's has come through in a bind for me on many occasions. Sometimes at no cost They do what they can to maintain their bottom line, and they seem to do it well. The fact that they hold reliable business hours puts them in a class above any other shop that's called Laurie home (cough... Buster's).
