I have a 93 Stratos Fish n Ski w 200 Johnson. It is one butt-heavy Son of a Gun!

Before we had the pontoon boat, we would use the Stratos for skiing/tubing, often with 4 or even 5 adults in the boat.

Was tough to get my 200 lb Son up on one ski, and was even tougher to keep it on plane at anything below 35 mph, which is a bit fast for cruising.

Dealer recommended a $50 foil as an inexpensive solution to try before messing with a new prop or other settings.

By golly, it worked! Skiers got up faster, and I could keep it on plane at 20-25.

Haven't used the boat for anything but fishing since 2007, and honestly, until this thread, I kinda forgot that the silly thing was still on there?

Motor still runs well, and boat performs as good as I could ask for.

Now, I'm wondering if I should take it off?

Not sure what I have to gain?

Gitnby, The scenario where you gain by removing them is; Running WOT and trimmed out. In that setting it may be holding you back by "diving under/attempting to pull the stern DOWN", when what you want THEN is more LIFT.

As long as the cav plate is level with the world they operate as designed.

I'd argue that 4-6" adjustable tabs mounted to the transom*** would be a better performance tweek though, since engine trim angle doesn't alter those.

***Think offshore racing*

Yep, it's Winter alright. :D

BE, the Beaver forum is generally about as exciting as its namesake. Thus the increased traffic over here --- and the proliferation of opinions. :XD:

My comment was refering to other websites that have discussion forums. ie: Bassboatcentral, etc. Certainly NOT forums on THIS website as the quality of people here is above board. But yes, it has been a bit boring over in the Beaver forum as of late. Most of the frequent users from years ago have departed or rarely post and the seemingly occasional "I hate Beaver" posts probably do not help.

Here are two lines for you to read between since you misunderstood my comment above:

That makes sense!

Never thought about it that way? At WOT, you are actually creating excessive drag, hence loss of speed and gas mileage.

I rarely run at WOT.

I can go 40+ with just me in the boat, and she is planed out nicely with the trim gauge barely over 1/2.

I'll try taking it off and see if I notice the diff?

Thanks!

Oh well. Guess I'd be cranky and defensive too if I was relegated for whatever reason to trolling around Beaver all the time trying to catch anything that will bite.

Oh Snap!

yeaaahhhhhh, you know the thing about trolling though, the bass are always biting, and ANYBODY can catch them. What a silly little fish. Thats why we should release them all when caught because they would be SOOOOOO easy for anyone to fish out, including my 6yo with a bobber and worm.

Hey Scott, by the way, DONT DO IT!! What the hell is wrong with you man!
