MOPanfisher Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Gentleman I don't disagree that we will likely have zebra mussels in time whether we do any treatment for this even or not. BUT I am not willing to let it slide by without making the attempt, even if it only gains us a year or two, it will be worth it. At the very least we will hve tried. I am willing to stand up for that even if it ultimately fails. Fishbait I understand, thing is we did notice, and made him remove it the next day, actually pretty lucky and some good Ranger work on that one. Note: There has been some speculation on why Pomme hasn't been infested with zebra mussels yet, possibly something with the chemisty of the water that may not be to their liking, if so I hope it stays that way. The last several years seem to proved a new invasive species of consern every year, whether its zebra mussels, Hydrilla, feral hogs, kudzu, spiny teasel etc. etc.
fishbait3 Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 i will say the ranger did do a good job and investigated the issue and matters were handled. Just like the Conservation agents that busted the guy that was gigging bass kudos to them as well Well wouldnt the dock company know the Regulations for transporting a dock from point a-bso all in all i think the dock owner plus the Dock company should both be held responsible
Members dembones Posted January 28, 2015 Members Posted January 28, 2015 I would consider it very lucky any one noticed that quick cause the time of the year, not a lot of winter traffic.\, and probably 90% of the locals know nothing of the zebra mussel issue. and as far as blame I think you have to look at the dock co.....they know about this issue.......they just didn't want the dollars to get away! they should be held to rules and regs.
Members Thunderchicken Posted January 29, 2015 Members Posted January 29, 2015 What area of the lake did this happen on?
MOPanfisher Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 The general area was the upper lindley creek arm.
bs1827 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 All I have written an article that explains the situation to post of the COE website, as soon as it gets posted there I will let you know. Short version no one "let" anyone put the dock on the lake, it was done without authorization. 2 the dropping of the lake is not to try to kill any zebra mussels off it is to reduce the amount of water to be treated, since its only about an acre of water the 3 foot drop will reduce the amount to treat by 130,680 cubic feet, or roughly 977,486 gallons of water. Any zebra mussels that might have fallen into less than 3 feet of water, yes hopefully they would dry out or freeze and die. We are planning on beginning the drawdown possibly as soon as tomorrow. I will do my best to check back and answer questions. What kind of treatment do they use for zebra mussels? Does COE use Zequanox, or is that still not allowed into open water by fed. standards??
Jerry Rapp Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 first, most of you didn't read the press release, as it answered almost all questions asked. Good PR Mopan. 2nd, the cost of all this is a waste of taxpayers money. How many boats have come from LOZ to POMME in, let's say the last 2 years? Mopan is doing his job, being a team player. But it is an effort in futility.
MOPanfisher Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Jerry I've been called a lot of things but never a team player before. Don't know if that is a compliment or not and really doesn't matter I guess. I will agree that the threats are continually there from boats that go from LoZ to Pomme on a regular basis, however the threat that they "might" contain veligers is different from knowing that adult zebra mussels are there. It may well go down as a lost cause in the end, however for the cost of treatment I am still more than willing to spend the $ even if it doesn't work I am not gonna give them (the mussels) a free ride if I can help it. We have been expecting a population of zebra mussels to develop for several years but so far it hasn't happened, hoping to continue that tradition.
