5bites Posted March 13, 2015 Author Posted March 13, 2015 I've seen Risto's that are custom weighted by a guy I forget the name I believe up north. Last name was Johnson if I recall but not sure. Anyhow if you have one he has "tinkered with" it goes from a $7 bait to about $30 or $40. I've also be playing with Redfin's as of late and tinkering. Took 4 that didn't work and made them with different size bills, angles and weighted. 2 of them were a success while one was a flop. Will post some pics maybe this weekend of them. After reading all you guys have posted about redfins I've been buying them to tinker with at flea markets. I haven't got started yet but want to! Have you tried making different bills for them yet? Another thing I thought about doing is an old pop-r trick which is sanding the sides to make them lighter and float higher. One day I'll get to them. This jewel came in today. Terrible pic but I'll get a better one when I get home. It should be a good substitute for redfins.
5bites Posted March 13, 2015 Author Posted March 13, 2015 I forgot to mention the bait above is a balsa bait. I've thought about attempting to make a fin type bait out of pvc board that a lot of bait makers are using now.

Up north as in North Carolina. One of the great crankbait tweakers of an area where it is done religiously. Heard some frogs on the way back from the store about 20 minutes ago. Critters know their stuff.

I played with a bunch of the redfin tweaks you listed. Results are on here under wake bait project or something similar. In the end, the best answer was just making wake baits out of balsa.
5bites Posted March 13, 2015 Author Posted March 13, 2015 I will have a Calvin Johnson #7 risto on the ready tomorrow actually. But yes what he did and what I'm trying to learn to do is very similar. There are so many baits, combinations, and mods that it's a little over whelming. For now I'm staying with ristos and dt's mostly. My bathtub is a bait test tank now. The sad part is sometimes you have to kill one bait to get one bait. When you get something cool and different out of it though it's exciting and worth it.

Must be the only guy who can make a wake bait with onions.
