netboy Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Caught this one last week on the Norfork. The skin was real smooth and the coloring was much darker than the other rainbows we caught. Also noticed the pink rainbow didn't extend to the tail and the spots were round. Whatya think?
Johnsfolly Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 I'm not that familiar with that hybrid. I was always under the impression that cutbows had the orange under the jaw line. The the white tipped ventral and anal fins seemd like there may be some brook trout genes in the mix.
Ham Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 I've always called the fish that have the colors of rainbow and dots everywhere AND the orange slashes under the jaw "Cut Bows". Of course, you might NOT want the guy from Louisiana detailing trout species. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Lancer09 Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Just a rainbow. Bows in the river will sometimes get those white tipped fins. Depending on the strain even some rainbows will get a splash of orange under their jaws when they are young. i dont even think a brookie and rainbow can hybridize. brittsnbirds 1

I was told years back that adc did rear some cuttbows in the hatchery. Got to have the slashes under the gill plates.

Lancer09 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I see what you were getting at now. and even if there is sometimes a splash of color under the jaw, its not always indicative of a cutthroat. Young crane rainbows will get a slash of bright orange in the same spot. Just part of what comes from being species that come from the same family.
Al Agnew Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 It's certainly an interesting fish, though. The spotting pattern looks VERY much like a Yellowstone cutthroat. I've never seen a rainbow with spots that large and that few, and bunched more toward the tail. The white tipped fins are very rainbow-like, however (if you're talking wild rainbows...the hatchery fish almost never get those white tipped fins). Hybrids usually have the cutthroat slashes but look more like rainbows. This thing doesn't have the slashes, fins and pink stripe say rainbow, but those spots shout cutthroat.
Lancer09 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 This was out of the White below BSD. Whatever Strain mix AR uses just colors up like that. Taney rainbow that started to develop those white tipped fins:
