Quillback Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Nice cold morning, no wind but lots of sun. I'm ready for a day that I can start out first thing in the morning wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Today was not the day. Pretty much decided to go with jigs today, didn't catch as many as a Ned day, but I expected that. Did get some quality, a 4.5 on a War Eagle 3/8 oz in Pond Scum Perch, and a 3 lb. on a Nutech Pro Series in GP/Blue 3/8 oz. Using Rage Tail Chunks as a trailer. Caught another 15 on the Nutech, with a few keepers in there. Mainly I was going into coves and fishing cover, most fish were shallow, less than 10 feet. I did get a 2.5 smallie on the Ned (I had to throw it for a bit). Water temps were 60-63. There's still some bass on beds, but not a lot. huntest, Donna G, Ticker and 3 others 6
merc1997 Bo Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 nothing like having not a numbers day, but a quality day!! really nice nice, and all very healthy, big and fat! bo
96 CHAMP Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Good report, glad you had a good day on the water, The wife and I are heading down tomorrow evening for 4 days, looking forward to getting back on the water. Champ188 1
Guest Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I love a good jig bite. Looks like that's the deal right now. The fish I caught last weekend on the Ned, were of the "no feel" variety. It just felt different & a fish would have the bait. I still think the big wave will happen this weekend, full moon & warm at night. Might be wrong tho
Bass Enforcer Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Thanks for the report quillback. How were you fishing the jig? Dragging, reeling, hoping. Just curious. I usually drag and do pretty good but always wanting to learn how someone else fishes it. Also were docks a part of your arsenal, or wood? Again thanks for the report. Nice job!
Jim Elam Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 LOL! Tried to do a quality bite trip last Monday. Started at 615 and finally picked up the Ned at 830 after picking up a few on the "power baits" (Thanks Bo - the NuTech jig is hands down the best jig I have ever thrown for several reasons). The Ned fished deep picked up lots of fish in the 15-18 inch range. On a 7'2" light action Fenwick rod with 10 lb braid and 6 lb red label Saguar leader, getting into numbers of these sized fish feels like quality! Caught a 3.5 lb LM that was a blast on that rig. I'm sure one of these days I'm gonna hook a big girl on the Ned and be sorry I'm using the light equipment, but I'm having so much fun on the darn thing I think I will take my chances... bluebasser86 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 The curse of the Ned rig. It's so effective at catching fish that sometimes it's hard to put down to look for a better quality bite, especially since it will catch quality fish along with the numbers Ham 1
Quillback Posted April 30, 2015 Author Posted April 30, 2015 I hear you Jim, and Bluebasser, the Ned is fun to fish and catches quality and quantity. I have fished it a lot so far this year, and I don't want to say that I'm tired of fishing it, but I like fishing other stuff especially jigs.
Quillback Posted April 30, 2015 Author Posted April 30, 2015 Thanks for the report quillback. How were you fishing the jig? Dragging, reeling, hoping. Just curious. I usually drag and do pretty good but always wanting to learn how someone else fishes it. Also were docks a part of your arsenal, or wood? Again thanks for the report. Nice job! I did catch the biggest bass off a back end dock corner, and a couple others off the side of docks. I didn't get any bites off the fronts or in the stalls, but I did not spend a lot of time fishing stalls. A few fish were caught off points and chunk rock banks, but most were in coves on the sunny side. The little pockets in the coves hold spawners, but I fish the deeper water in front of the beds or off the secondary points, I'm not targeting the bedding fish, but looking for the ones that are lurking in the deeper water near the bedding areas. I usually do a kind of hop with the jig, just lift it a bit, a few inches, and let it drop. Had several chasers back to the boat, so swimming a jig may get a fish or two also.
Bass Enforcer Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Thanks. I'm looking forward to getting back down there. Good luck
