Old plug Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I do not think that is a gar are any other prediter. people repostingvon here they aer seeijg other fish like that. it looksto me like there was a injury nd something is causing it to spread. Those fish should be examined bya bioligest to determinewhat that is.
WeekendWarrior Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I had a keeper K in our small club tourney same weekend as BB Bash that had the same thing but not as bad caught in mill creek
Browning Guy Posted May 27, 2015 Author Posted May 27, 2015 Look at the third picture under Mill Creek 5-26 by "HammerTime". The rear dorsal has the goo I mentioned to start this thread. Not bad compared to the fish I was catching up the mid James Point 11 + 12. They had the goo, but half of the fin was gone and bones sticking out. Not just one or two fins but every fin on some. Pre-spawn and not fanning yet in mid April. I haven't heard back from the Conservation Department. May need to resend the e-mail. Would love to know what's causing it. I haven't swam in the James for several years now. It used to be almost as clear as the water at the dam 25-30 years ago.
Alex Heitman Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Check out this 7lber my dad caught last year that weird stuff all over his head. We caught another one out of the same cove this year that was over 6lbs that had similar stuff going on. Hope it's just from the spawn.
Quillback Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Google can be your friend. Some of the terminology is over my head, but looks like a case could be made for this as to being the slime cause. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16244080 Or this: https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/vm059
GNSfishing Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I've caught several with the black markings in their fins and tail & on their head around the Cape Fair area from Thompson on up towards point 15. I don't have the slightest idea what it is. Becoming to sound like that its lake wide. Has this been notice in Beaver of Bull Shoals??
Alex Heitman Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 The black spots are fine. I was concerned with the fish my dad caught and the one I caught this year because the normal green skin had come off and there was a slimy goo layer on top.
