Members bgm Posted May 28, 2015 Members Posted May 28, 2015 I was down on Taneycomo last weekend and tried jig fishing for trout. I did not have any luck with a jig. I don't know if it was the weather, how I presented it or if the rod I was using wasn't sensitive enough. I could not feel it hit the bottom even in spots where I could plainly see it had gotten clear down to the bottom. Does anyone have any tips for jig fishing in moving water? My experience is in still lakes as opposed to Taneycomo.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 28, 2015 Root Admin Posted May 28, 2015 https://www.youtube.com/user/phillilley Search "jig" on my channel. There's quite a bit about jig fishing in current.
Members Fly Fishing Pete Posted May 29, 2015 Members Posted May 29, 2015 There's really no wrong way, just experiment and see what the fish want. Cast and retrieve, swim it, drift it... The fish seem to be near the bottom so make sure to use enough weight. Phil Lilley 1
Members bgm Posted May 30, 2015 Author Members Posted May 30, 2015 What kind of gear would you suggest? I was using a Pflueger President on a 6ft Diawa spinmatic rod with Stren 4lb test line. I've been looking at a 6 ft UL St. Croix rod for jogging. What do you think?

I have a new St. Croix Trout Series 5'6" UL Fast (TSS56ULF2) that I have used for a few months jig fishing -- very, very nice. ($119 at Bass Pro in Branson) Very light and sensitive yet stiff enough for good hook set ... been fishing 1/16 - 1/8 ounce with 4lb test. (Berkley Vanish and Trilene XL - prefer the Trilene) ollie 1
Members Fly Fishing Pete Posted May 31, 2015 Members Posted May 31, 2015 I have a 7' ultralight Bass Pro Micro Lite graphite rod with a Bass Pro reel, spooled with 4lb test P-Line Flouroclear. I prefer a longer rod for jig fishing.
Seth Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 I prefer a 6'6"-7' light or medium-light action rod for throwing 3/32-1/8oz jigs that are most commonly used on Taneycomo. Ultralight is too whippy for my tastes. I've got two setups that I use. BPS Microlite Graphite 7' light action spinning rod Pflueger President 6925 spinning reel 4# Pline Fluoroclear clear Shakespeare Micro Series 7' light action spinning rod Abu Garcia Cardinal 101 spinning reel 4# Trilene XL clear
Johnsfolly Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 I basically fish the same setup that Seth mentioned. I will switch out to 2# Pline fluoroclear if I an going to fish microjigs in really clear water.
Gatorjet Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 My very favorite rod for jig fishing 3/32, and 1/8 ounce jigs is the 6' Lilleys LT 600. I tried the 6 1/2' LT 660, kinda by mistake in fact, and found it a bit too "Woodley". The 6' seems to have the perfect blend of sensitivity, and backbone. Any decent reel will be fine. I have an older Quantum Catalyst PTi that works great. For all my straight jig fishing I use Maxima Ultragreen in 2Lb. Even in dinger water where others go up to 4LB. For lighter jigs like 1/16 ounce I use a 7ft light action Fish Eagle II rod from Cabela's with a Fish Eagle II reel. On the other side, if due to heavy current I want to go with a jig a little heavier than 1/8 ounce I use a BPS 6 1/2' Microlite. Real men go propless!
