Split shot In front of a Ned ?

Yea to add weight but not impede on the action of the lure. Just weight to help it sink.

Weight above the head. I have no idea if it would work but I'd start at a foot above. A guy might as well splitshot rig a cut stick work at that point though.

Eh I have no idea. That would turn the jig head around when you dragged it. I'm not sure how that would work. Put a big enough weight and you can bounce the Ned around like a dropshot lol

Anyone remember the old episode of Bassmaster from the 80's featuring Guido Hibdon skipping tubes around docks on LOZ on 6# mono and an old Cardinal reel?

You bet it can be done. Done easily, no. That is why it works. It puts a tiny bait in nasty places, in front of pressured fish.

LOL Yep, I didnt only see the episode, I was there. :)

I think one of those fish (in 2 days) MIGHT have bumped 15".

It is a cute way to entertain guide clients in the Spring but you ain't gonna take home many checks doing it.

And fishing for checks is the only reason to put the boat in the lake?

Let's not forget boat lifts. Seriously how many 3-4+ pound smallies have been heaved over boat lifts on table rock with 10lb line using a finesse jig!? Lots of many has changed hands to this pattern. In fact I could see the Ned shining in the situation beefed up slightly.

Have you considered or tried what Bo does sometimes on different baits and use a splitshot above it to help get it down better? You're gonna lose some feel and casting would be awkward. If a guy was bent on using it way on down it might work though. Or not.

Really the little rig is fundamentally a horizontal presentation. At 40' or so fishing vertically just becomes more efficient. To fish that deep you could bump up to the 3/16 head. It's a terrible idea in shallow water, but has its place for deeper work.
