Eric82 Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 For those of you fly fisherman out there that have fly fished the Huzzah what patterns have done well for you? Mine have been mostly topwater. white and yellow poppers. Thanks!
Gavin Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Sparkleminnow size 4 in olive, or brown orange..Other than that...Sneaky Petes or Blockheads dressed Sneaky Pete style. Chartruese, White, Pink, or Black. Pink works in clear water for some reason. Eric82 1
joeD Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 They all work. But are you satisfied with the size you are catching? If not, then you must move up in size and weight.
Eric82 Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 Excellent. I have used olive n black woollies and mohair leeches before. Size 8-10. Interested in tying some smaller sized clousers 6-8 chartuese. Have you had success with those? Or pistol Pete's? I guess one of my main questions is have larger flies worked better than smaller flies or vice versa..trying to make up a huzzah/courtois specific fly box. thanks everyone.
joeD Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 How do you want to fish Eric? What is your goal in terms of fishing success? Make sure of that first. However, the smaller you go, the less chance you have in catching a big smallie (I'm sure there is anecdotal evidence of someone hooking into a big un with a teeny fly, but that is rare). It takes commitment to throw a large fly all day long, without success much of the time. But, when that big brown bomber hits, and she/he will, you will know that your efforts flinging an indelicate mass of white junk will have been worth it. But that is me. That is how I fish now. You're probably different. Then go with that with no apologies. It's about YOU. And nobody else.
Eric82 Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 Right on. I'm going down the weekend of the 17th for the maiden voyage of my new fishing kayak. I'll cover all the bases then and take my 5 wt and 7wt. As much as I like topwater I really want to work on my streamer game...thanks!!!
Eric82 Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 Hey joeD do you mostly swing that fly in the current? Jig it? Along the bottom? Really trying to pick some brains about techniques as well. Haha. Thanks!!!
fishinwrench Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Keep those big streamers moving fast so as not to give them a real good look at it. Make it to where they either have to eat it NOW or it's gonna get away from them. Pressured Smallies make the most mistakes when forced to make snap-decisions. Eric82 1
joeD Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Yes to all. Swing. strip, Let the current take it. Just keep it in the water. Parallel to wood helps. In other words, fish upstream from a downstream position, yank hard next to wood. Mr Wrench is correct. Keep it moving and let the fish make an aggressive move toward it. Their eyes are red because they're pissed. Eric82 1
