ruthead Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 As mentioned above you can't throw a freshman QB into an offense where you have a questionable line at best, young receivers that continue to drop ball, AND a running game with your best running back out and doesn't seem to be working. Recipe for disaster for the future of Lock. All he learns is he has to rush decisions to receivers that may drop the ball. No chance to develope like you want. Then when it is his time to play full time you got another season of learning to not rush thing and play with confidence. Stay with Mauk for now and get Lock time when you can. Matty has a way with finding wins most of the time. "Pretty soon we may not have any rights left because it might infringe on someone's rights"
stlfisher Posted September 24, 2015 Author Posted September 24, 2015 The OL actually has been pretty good regarding pass protection, it is run blocking they are really struggling with. UCONN's defensive strategy last week was to stack the box against the run, keep Maty in the pocket, and take away the deep routes. They forced Mauk to dink and dunk down the field. They did not allow him to run. The middle of field 10-15 yards down field was pretty wide open. Mauk threw 2 passes in those areas completing 1 of them. This is what teams are going to do until Mauk starts completing those passes in the middle of the field...he rarely even attempts them....cause I believe he can't see them. The type of defense UCONN played is very vulnerable in the middle of the field to a solid passing game. That argues for the better passer...which is 100% Lock. He may not be ready yet, but he played in the 4th Q in a 3 point game. That possession is not planned in the second half, but was a gut feel call by Pinkle and Henson. I hope Maty and the running game pick up speed as that would be great for Mizzou, but Lock is not as far way from starting as one might think. I find it comical to criticize Lock for his 4th and 7 throw. He is a freshman with few possession's to make an impact. Mauk has done that all time for the last several years and his 3 years older than Lock. You can deal with some of that with a freshman ,but not a third year starter....that is the problem.
joeD Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 The only problem is our expectations. We lost too many impact defensive and offensive players. Mauk is not good enough to rise above these losses. His success was a product of those players who are now gone. It's a talent issue, teamwise, plain and simple. We just don't have enough, especially at key positions. Get ready for a mediocre season. stlfisher 1
Alex Heitman Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Where is Brad Smith or Chase Daniel when you need them??
ozark trout fisher Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 I agree that the fans that boo Mauk (or any other player on our team) suck. I had the misfortune to be standing near quite a few of them at the game, and it took all the restraint I've got to keep my mouth shut. Booing your own team/coach/players should really be saved for the most extreme of circumstances. Like if that player has committed a violent crime in the recent past. Or the coach has been physically abusing his players. Or your head coach is Lane Kiffin. Or you are a Kansas fan at any point since about 2008. We can't check off any of those boxes My lack of concern primarily comes from how low-pressure this season is. The last two years have been so good and the attrition so extreme in a few position groups that I can totally accept what's going on, frustrating as it is. If this team just gets to 6-7 wins we can all be shrug our shoulders and move onto next season, which should be pretty good. Even a 4-8, 5-7 type face-plant would have to feel like little more than a bump on the road. This is a rebuilding year. There will be some good moments and a lot of bad, before we have another shot at a 10-win type of campaign in 2015 with a more seasoned roster. When you look at the bigger picture everything is still pretty much on track.
stlfisher Posted September 29, 2015 Author Posted September 29, 2015 Yea, it is going to be tough this year based upon what we have seen so far. We are young at many key offensive positions and the OL struggles is a mystery to me...kinda makes me really worried about that position next year too. Maybe Pinkel and company were trying to beef up the defense the last couple of years, but the team seems to have an entirely different identity from the offensive teams of the past. Just not sure if that is on purpose or not. Looks like portions of practices will be close initially this week...probably means there will be some changes on the depth chart.
stlfisher Posted September 30, 2015 Author Posted September 30, 2015 Maty Mauk suspended for South Carolina game. Satus to he evaluated after Saturday's game. Fishy...lots of rumors, but explains closing a portion of practice today.
ozark trout fisher Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 This is why Pinkel is a good coach. Just when everyone thinks Mizzou is dead the past couple of years they come back with a performance like this. I still don't think this team is going to Atlanta (or getting particularly close) but this win was very likely the difference in getting bowl eligible or ending the season in early December. If this team can hit 8 wins in the regular season that will be a great success. Beat Florida next week and we'll be on track for that.
ozark trout fisher Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 what did Mauk do to get suspended? No one outside of the football program seems to know. There are a lot of disgusting, unsourced rumors going around around from the underbelly of our fanbase that I won't aid in passing on. All we know is that it wasn't a legal issue.
