Lakes around Springfield

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I'm a freshman at MSU, and over Labor day weekend I'd like to do some fishing. I'm not very familiar with the area so I was wondering which lakes around Springfield would be best for bass? I've heard that Fellows lake used to be a great bass fishing lake, but not so much anymore. I was going to try McDaniel lake, and Valleys Water Mill lake/pond. Any other places worth mentioning? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Welcome to Springfield! McDaniel's has some huge fish in it. But you have to fish from the bank, and can only fish upriver of the bridge. Fellows is not as bad as people let on. It's pretty easy to fish from the bank. But you can't put a boat on it unless you get a seasonal pass. I usually walk the park/pavilion side with some success. I would throw a zoom horney toad around. You also have Springfield lake, which is usually really good. Much easier to fish out of a boat though. The list goes on and on. You also have the James River , Finley River, Linden Lure Lake, Sac River. To name a few. Good luck!

McDaniel has HUGE bass and catfish. Fishing from shore is a challenge. As for fishing up river from the bridge that spans the water, well, let's just say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. You can do well there, it's taken me 3 seasons to figure out some patterns on the lake but it's worth your while. Hybrid stripers and crappie get big here as well.

where would you recommend shore fishing at Stockton? I usually work the greenfield launch at 160/CC and go out on that long strip also. tried working the shoreline at cedar ridge also without finding much to cast to.

The Masters area is good. Highpoint has some good spots. Most of the bridges have some access. I like the area around Cedar Ridge campground. Not too much around the regular ramp but if you get down in the area around the campground then you have a lot of water you can cover. It's best when camping season is over and you can get down in there. If you can get out to the big rock it holds some fish.

Probably not going to catch the fish of a lifetime but it should be pretty easy to keep it interesting.

Up at Stockton I like to go up to the Mutton Creek Marina and throw craws and large spinnerbaits at night during the week. The owners tend to get upset if you fish near the docks but don't mind too much if you're respectful of others and don't make a ton of noise. And if they tell you to fish somewhere else, then follow their directions. I've caught a few 7 pound largemouth out of there.
