Members TheStump Posted September 22, 2015 Members Posted September 22, 2015 Im 49 years old and coming to Estes Park, CO on Oct 3-8 for a honeymoon trip. While the wife sleeps in early morning hours, I plan to fish in the Big Thompson (which is about 10 steps from the cabin) in the mornings and evenings. Im bringing a fine 6 foot ultralight spinning rod and may consider renting a fly rod while there. But, my goal is spincasting for trout (any kind). I am a wildlife biologist in Mississippi and have never caught a trout before. I just want to have some fun and eat a few while we are there. We have a cabin just a few miles below the spillway of the lake. Give me some tips for lures and colors (spinners, jigs, mini stick baits, etc).
Gavin Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Google Missouri Trout Hunter...There is plenty of good info on lure, fly, and bait fishing for trout on his page. Think the Big Thompson has some special regulation water. Read up on it before you go. Its not always the case, but rainbow trout like small flashy stuff and bright colors, plus they will feed anytime. Small brown trout behave like rainbows but they like more natural colors. Big brown trout...those over 15" or so like to eat other fish and tend to feed during lower light periods. Think minnow lures. Good luck!
Mitch f Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 FWIW, I wouldn't bring an ultralight. Go with a med light. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Gavin Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Agree with Mitch. Medium light will cast small stuff & 1/2oz suspending jerkbaits.
Johnsfolly Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 I agree with taking a medium light rod if you think that you will encounter larger rainbow, cutthroat, or brown trout. I prefer lines that the fish may no be likely to see as well, but in the # test needed to land the fish you're likely to encounter. 2 to 4# if only small fish like rainbow or brook trout and 6# for bigger fish. I use P-line fluoroclear and often carry two separate reels with different line typically 2# and 6#. I will fish light jigs (1/125 to 1/32 oz), small spinners, even nymphs under a small float indicator with the 2# and more reaction baits like crankbaits or bigger jigs (1/16 to 1/8 oz) on the 6# line. good luck and let us know how you did.
Members TheStump Posted September 23, 2015 Author Members Posted September 23, 2015 I've spooled with PowerPro 8#, which is dia. equiv. of 1# mono. That pound test issue should not be a problem.
mic Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Buy some 1 5\8 casting bubbles on Amazon. Tie two very small swivels to line on either side for dry flies and a single swivel below for wet flies. Add on 5x leader and a fly. This will work with flies. This time of year hoppers and beetles will work. If you can afford get a half day guide and fly fishing lessons. Have them come on site and show you the roops on the water in front of your place.
Gavin Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Add a rod length leader to your braid. Trout can be very line shy at times. A three turn surgeons knot works well.
Members TheStump Posted September 24, 2015 Author Members Posted September 24, 2015 Thanks. Good idea.
Members TheStump Posted September 24, 2015 Author Members Posted September 24, 2015 Speaking of jerk baits. What colors would you suggest. I can find rainbow and brown trout colors and the silver or gold shad here locally.
