fishinwrench Posted October 11, 2015 Author Posted October 11, 2015 Doesn't look a zebra mussell. By that size they would be permanently attached. Is there a noticeable shell. Regular mussels don't attach to things I don't believe. No shell, a few that were still kinda wet are the consistency of a booger.
fishinwrench Posted October 11, 2015 Author Posted October 11, 2015 These come from gravois area or up the river? Not 100% sure because I've been both places in the last several days. It seems to take 3-4 days for them to dry out and turn dark, otherwise you really can't see them. They either came from up above Proctor cr. or here in the Gravi.
MOPanfisher Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Not zebras then. Maybe some aquatic insect larvae or small bryozoan but haven't been able to find a pic of anything I thought really looked like yours.
nomolites Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Musta picked em up in that skinny water you like to hang around in; I have never seen any of those but if they are on the hull the IO/inboard guys may have need for concern. Mike
Old plug Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I went and looked at them. The ones I seen have shrunk up and dried out. From the way they are stuck to the hull I am convinced they are zebra mussel's at the size they were they were would get into a intake outboard are I/O. Water does not need to be shallow for them to exist and spread. I used to pick them up on stuff deep jigging all the time in 40 ft of water. They all went away during a real hot summer we had sometime back. They were floating past my dock turned upside down. Looked like the water was ful of punkin seeds at times. MDC said then they would be a come and go thing. No idea what happened to them. No telling how long they had Ben drifting like that before something came fthrough them. Maybe that is why they appeared a little larger
Old plug Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 All I can say I hope they ar something other than zebra are God forbid quadra or whatever the other one is. They are a lot more problem than the regular zebra. They look very similar. They both float free like that also in larva stage. Suisaluki ------Do do those egg masses ever float around like that.
MOPanfisher Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 They are not quaggas or zebras, they will be attached by the time they are the size of grains of sand. One of the tests for presence of zebras is to hang a plate of glass in the water, when the veligers attach and start to grow it feels like sandpaper.

The snail egg masses aren't free floating. They are deposited just at or below the water line most of the time. Should be bunches of them on shoreline rocks and docks as well.
fishinwrench Posted October 12, 2015 Author Posted October 12, 2015 Where's all the hotshot BIOLOGISTS when you need one ? Considering where they came from I have to doubt that they are snail spawn. The little tube/tail thing that each of them has should be the give away. Do snails have those?
