I'm looking at getting a GoPro to be able to record and remember some of those awesome fishing trips. I don't know much about them but was wondering if anyone on here uses them. Which one should I get? What accessories work best to record some from above the water as well as underneath the water. Mainly looking to use for trout and bass in rivers and strip pits. I'll be wading as well as fishing from a kayak, jon boat, and bass boat. Thanks! Any advice or tips is appreciated!

I think you would be pleased with anyone of them outside of the Hero4 Black. It's a really nice camera too but it's only advantage is 4K video which takes a pretty impressive computer and software to process and you probably won't notice the difference. The Session is the smallest but the Hero4 Silver has the LCD on the back. I have a Hero3 Silver or White maybe that is basically the same as their cheapest option now at $129. I paid twice that much a couple of years ago and it's a very good camera.

Most of these have wifi which allows you to control the camera from a smart phone. You can even see what the camera sees on your phone.

Just remember that once you take the video you have to upload it to your computer and edit it, then upload it to something like youtube to share it. Don't take that part of it lightly. I see a lot of people spend good money on a camera and then do nothing with it when they decide the processing of the video is a pain in the arse.

The best accessory I have found is a big clamp from Lowes. Attach the camera on that and you can clamp it any where.

I have an older version of one and love mine.  I will say that if you are looking to zoom in on something further away this camera isn't for you.  Also like flysmallie said, if you don't have a newer computer you might as well forget about it.  This camera needs a computer that can handle the processing speed.  4k video is no slouch!  I always shoot in VGA because of my computer speed and the fact that it does take forever to upload anything to the net.  That being said, if you get one you can get editing software and do a lot with it.

Well, I'm gonna just say it. Video is for kids. Real men shoot still cameras.

Finally bought a Hero4 silver for the trip we made on the Colorado through the Grand Canyon.  Shot great video of going through the rapids...the helmets we had to wear already had GoPro mounts on top, so it was easy to connect it the mount atop your head.  And although it IS a bit of a pain to edit and download, I found that the still photos I captured from the video were excellent...Untitled.jpg.59207fdd7470b3dea959e9dba2056538ee5671cb_lavabigkahuna1.jpg.4d368a0

It's true though that you can't expect to zoom in and get anything that's any distance away.  I tried to get other rafts coming through the rapids, but even when at the base of the rapid they were just little yellow smudges in the water.

You can shoot still pictures with a GoPro old man.

Yes -- shitty ones.

Yeah, was not impressed with the still photos, as opposed to capturing still frames from the video.  Even at their narrowest angle setting, which was only 7 megapixel resolution, they were too wide angle.  The still frames from the video were also very wide angle, but it was nice being able to capture the exact frame you wanted.

Bret Palmer is the man to ask about Go Pro stuff. He has a ton of hours under his belt playing with it. He'll see this and chime in. (I hope).

What do you want to do with the video?

Like others said, the gopro isn't great for taking photos, but it is still one of the best action cameras for most.  You can take pretty good video without having to worry about water ruining your camera.  I have a gopro hero3+ black that I've used the past two years.  I've made a few upgrades recently and now have a few hero4 cameras that I've just started playing with.  There's lots of mounts out there sold by gopro and various third parties.  I mostly use a tripod (with the tripod mount) to get all my fishing video (above and below water), but also have a few of the other mounts that I've tested.  I took my gopro with me on a kayak trip in Michigan two summers ago.  I used a chest mount and a mount on the kayak to take some video.  Here are still images from the video I took to give you an idea of what you can do.

Most of the video I record is total crap.  The real magic happens with editing and that requires a decent computer.  I've posted some videos on OAF that shows what the gopro and editing can do.  I can give you as much information as you want just let me know.
