Old plug Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 i just put 0/6 or larger hook in the head when I do manage to fish them. i like those big Tokar style hooks for this. Use both weighted and unweighted.
Sprint21fter Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Umbrella flash mob jrs, 3/8oz lucky strike swimbait belly hooks rigged tex-pose it will make the rig less weedless and you can normally pop it free on the retrieve and fish it tight to the cover which is where the fish normally setting, swimming fluke jrs or kalin grubs, throw the all day if you can so you can get your confidence up with it. Good luck
Bluff-Bassin Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 I have made my own football jigs for the last few years and have started pouring the same football heads without the weed guard and a 4/0 hook to use on a rig. They are a wire hook so I can straighten them out if need be when snagged and by pouring my own they only run me about 25cents a piece(mustads). When their point folds or their bend gets straightened I just swap it out for brand new. That means my hooks are always super sharp and I can just ease into the fish. I've had a really good bite to land ratio so far. I never realized it but the football shaped head actually adds a little roll to the swimbaits which personal belief is helps the action. Not to hijack but has anyone experimented with alternative lines? I've been using 40-65lbs braid on bull shoals and I really think the zebra mussels slice right through even heavy braid. I have thought about trying 30lbs fluorocarbon or 30+ mono for added abrasion resistance but would still be strong enough to straighten a hook. Anyone played around with that at all?
wareaglecamo Posted December 23, 2015 Author Posted December 23, 2015 great input . . . great ideas . . . amazing how each person eventually settles on their own specific technique undoubtedly "tweeked" over time to produce positive results . . . I am immensely grateful for all the feedback . . . What makes OAF soooooo special to a person like myself looking for advice is I feel the responses are genuine, supported by personal experience over time and not a result of a sponsorship rooted in an obligation to promote specific products. There is no substitute for the kind of unbiased and unselfish feedback that continuously surfaces on this wonderful forum. Thanks so much. I will "re-load" psychologically and give it an honest and "open-minded" try in the next few weeks following Christmas. magicwormman 1
Sore Thumbs Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Been seeing a lot of hooks with small belly weights used as well. Texsposing the hooks. Make it a lot more difficult to get hung up. Don't think the baits are ultra important as long as they have decent color and action
Guest Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 I've gotta pair of the KC school em rigs in my box. I've never used them, but they're lighter & more compact than most, not to mention cheaper. I'm just going to bag up all my grubs & swimbaits & use them first. Need to catch a few fish on them to justify my spending & lure hoarding tendencies.
