J-Doc Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Having a 115 PROXS myself (2-stroke)....I'm very intrigued by this new release. My RT188 would already lose to a 4-stroke 115 Merc, now with the ProXS model, it would probably gain upwards of 3mph or better. And, sip the gas too. My current motor drinks only fumes and sips gas like I do with extra hot coffee. Very intrigued by this. If I were to buy a new rig, I would be looking into this pretty heavily. Oh... And how do I know the 4s is faster? Multiple conversations or messages with folks that have my boat, setup, and the difference is the 4s is typically a little faster. Just thought I'd share this. Might be a sign of things to come on larger outboards as well. https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/engines/outboard/pro-xsr/115-pro-xs-fourstroke/ Need marine repair? fishinwrench Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Quote Pro XS is the best-selling tournament fishing outboard in the world, and has powered more competitive anglers to victory than any other engine. Run with the same confidence professional tournament anglers have – trust Pro XS. This is true... but not for the reasons they are implying. Merc forces/strongarms their way onto more new boats, and THAT is why. I still challenge you to show me a good, dependable 15 year old V-6 4-stroke outboard. I am currently running a 1986 Johnson GT150 and the gas bill hurts way less than a constant monthly boat payment would. Unless you are well off enough to pay cash for a fresh rig every 8 years you are going to be financially hurt owning these new age motors. The tournaments and guide trips don't pay THAT well. Fact. dtrs5kprs 1
J-Doc Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 I didn't say they were the best selling. That's quoting media from Mercury. I do find it interesting that the 4 stroke is now faster than the 2 stroke. Probably because it's lighter. How long have 4 strokes been around now? 10-15yrs? Need marine repair? I have a '10 Mercury 25hp 4 stroke on my 1754 Grizzly. First boat in a while, did not realize the 4 strokes were that much shorter lived. Even with good maintenance schedule and care?

Wonder if an old tower of power merc 115 would drag it down the lake by the tail... My gas bill on a 250XS is hardly visible with a microscope. If you fish instead of running you don't burn gas.
Ham Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I use about the same amount of fuel with my Pro XS 250 HP that I did with the Yammy 130 HP on my metal boat. Very pleased. I do try to trailer close and I don't run around for the fun of it. I mainly use WOT for runs back to ramp trying to beat darkness. dtrs5kprs 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Still alot of good strong 1970's 9.5-25hp 2-stroke outboards out there. So I guess let us know in 30-some years. There sure is alot more parts in a 4-stroke......just to get 25 horses. What's the point? The only thing better about them is that they are quieter. And as for fuel economy on a 25.....hell your better off burning the crap up pretty quick. Old fuel is bad news. dtrs5kprs 1
