dtrs5kprs Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 The 1/8 has been far and away the most popular size, lake or river. Unfortunately, I think that is partly because the lake guys can feel it better, and end up fishing it like a little shakey head. That will work, but is not optimal. I completely understand the need for a heavier head in flow. Quite a few river folks have requested the 3/16. I would just caution staying away from it in lakes. The lightest head you can fish is always the best one.
Ham Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Dave, what size would you use for fishing > 20 foot deep? Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

Once I get past 35' I start thinking about other things, like working vertically. I keep some 3/16oz heads in the boat, but rarely throw one. Tried some in wind last spring, and switched back to the 1/8oz. This was 30+ mph wind in April. That big head just doesn't fish the same way. Really think it overpowers the little bait.
Ham Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I end up using quite a few 1/8 oz heads because I am often fishing 20-35 FOW a lot of the time. I'm not fishing deeper than that. I can. I choose not to do so. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
dtrs5kprs Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 The 1/8 fishes really well a lot of the time. I still prefer the 1/16 and always start with it, seems like it just produces more bites. There are days and places for both. They will both do similar work in 6'-12'. It is the areas outside that range where the differences start to show up.
MOPanfisher Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Before I knew it had a name I always tried to stick with a light 1/16th in river or creek whenever possible, but sometimes it just wasn't possible. Then began using an1/8th and pretty much stuck with it, mostly because it would still work in slower water and I could drop it into faster current when needed. Still haven't tried it in a lake yet.
Guest Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I fish the 1/8 in moderate current, deep water & windy conditions. I start with the 1/16 & go to the 1/8 if necessary. Ive drop shotted using the 3/16 rig as the weight & a dropshot hook about 2ft up the line with a nose hooked slim z. Its kinda a frankenstein contraption but it generates bites sometimes.
