You obviously can't buy most lures unpainted, so if the paint job isn't that important (i.e. doesn't need to be a work of art), why go to the trouble to repaint practically all of them yourself?

Champ188 Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 This could be a really good discussion. I can see your point, Bo, and I agree that there are times when all you need to do is get the basic color scheme right and you're in business. But is this true all the time? Is the fantastic custom paint work of guys like fellow OA member Tim Hughes all for naught? I have personally seen times when I am convinced that the detail of a custom paint job made a difference in my catch rate. Members of the forum, what say you? darrencombs 1
96 CHAMP Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 I have wanted to invest in some custom colors but have not, partly because I wouldn't no which Colors to have created, cost to much to have custom paint jobs and find out it didn't make any difference, but I am sure at times it could and probably does make a difference. For those of you that paint your own, you have room for error, scratch it off and try another color

I think for the most part color is overrated. I think people get attached to a color because it worked one time then the confidence level goes up in that bait and you fish it better going forward because you trust it. Sure I think natural colored baits that match natural forage in the body of water is the way to go, especially on clear lakes such as TR. Conditions dictate what colors SHOULD be best, dingy water vs clear, overcast vs sunny, etc. Action of the bait and getting it in front of active fish is 90% of the battle. But at times color DOES MATTER as I have been spanked by my brother throwing an Ozark Smoke 5" Dinger (in the back of the boat no less) while I was up front with the same bait only in Green Pumpkin. In the end it's fishing and there is never a clear cut definitive answer, which is what makes fishing great. Fishing is a blank canvas and it's up to the artist/fisherman's interpretation of how he/she wants to go at it.
m&m Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Abkeenan, are you saying I should retire my color selector? Dr. Hill will be crushed!!! Mike big c 1

To me it comes down to confidence and I have a ton of confidence in the baits I've had custom painted. I also feel I have somewhat of an advantage because 99% of the fisherman out there won't have these colors. In all reality it probably doesn't matter. But I fish better when I have confidence in the bait and color I'm throwing. Champ188 1
