MOPanfisher Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Yeas a few do escape through the dam at Pomme, occasionally one will be caught by a walleye fisherman below the dam. When we do our periodic inspection where we dewater the stilling basin it seems like there is always one or two in there. I can't imagine a tiger musky being that big or surviving this long in Stockton, I would think it was a transplant by a musky fisherman, but heck stranger things have happened. Personally I have zero love for muskie, they have a love affair with my shad raps on Pomme thiugh, i am sure that the dern thinges get together and laugh about it later. I can remember as a kid on Stockton catching crappie on minners and you would see a little group of gulls working your way diving down and eating something. After a couple experiences my dad would warn me to hang on, about half the time your minner and hook would take off for parts unknown, sometimes you would get back a mangled gold hook sometimes not, but it sure killed the crappie fishing for a while. I believe MDCs plan is for every lake to have a "trophy" species, whether it be walleye, wipers or walleye. I would trade every muskie in Pomme for a stocking of wipers and more walleye, but then I am biased, I like things I can eat. dan hufferd 1
Members jimalert3 Posted March 15, 2016 Members Posted March 15, 2016 I caught a musky fishing for bass at chicken rock on the southeast side about 1980 or sometime around that dat. I also saw many swim by my boat when I was crappie fishing. T hey were usually in pares and moving fast.
BilletHead Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Thanks MoPanfisher, Like you I am sure it was pure musky. Like many mysterious things in life I would like to know the truth. As in the "X" files the truth is out there but we may not know it. It can also be said anticipation is better than realization . Rumor mills can go rampant. Let me share a story. A while back there was a guy who posted that there had been a rather large walleye caught at Caplinger Mills. I thought huh, neato. So I was over there a week ago yesterday fishing a shoal next to another guy, he was from KC. He asked if I had heard of the big walleye? Yes I had. Well he than said he was on a trip to Hawaii and got a text about it. It was 18 lbs. So and so was involved, the game warden got the fish and told the catcher they would give him a replica of the fish. This warden had officially measured, weighed and certified the fish. I my mind was wow what a catch and how neat. So now to Sunday morning and the Mrs. and I were again on a shoal in waders trying our luck. No catch for me but Pat caught a spotted bass. Then it rained and since we got soaked the day before we were not going to do that again. We drove back to Caplinger to see the low water and study the newly formed river changes. Well right there on the bridge doing the same was the Cedar county game warden. We had a really nice visit and here is what he said. I was the one who supposedly verified the fish, wasn't me or any of us. I was supposed to confiscate the fish, wasn't me. We were supposed to have a replica made for the guy, nope not us. He than said heck last he heard it was up to 22lbs. 8oz. and that would beat the Missouri record by 2 oz. (don't know the right exact oz. so don't quote me, BilletHead on that). Agent said rumors spread fast and I have not seen this fish or had anything to do with it period. hahahahha Funny how true things like this really is. Another quickie. Several years back i caught a solid 10lb walleye on the Bates County Drainage Ditch. Had a friend with me. So after many years I run into a guy on that river. He said aren't you the one who caught a big one awhile back? Yes I caught a 10. Heck so and so (my friend) has been telling that is was 15lbs. When I heard this it had grown a pound a year . MOPanfisher Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 That sounds like a Derek Farwell reply for sure. I can't count the number of stories like that I have heard. Face book and soctal medit buses a lot of the "stories". Pictures of alligator gar supposedly shot on Pomme (not), photos of a huge buck swimming across Pomme, hmm when did we get spruce trees? And I often see the pictures elsewhere before someone claims it was Pomme, stockton, Truman etc.. But I like a good story. BilletHead 1

BilletHead Man that sounds like last weekend for the wife and I. I caught a spotted bass right in front of the boat ramp at C.Mills, Then we headed to Stockton dam, and then to the Taylor Bridge area. Yes we too were looking for bigfoot or a big walleye, what ever came first. To who ever wanted to know, I would NOT put my boat in at the steel bridge boat ramp ( if you can call it that ). It was muddy and slick Saturday, it will be bad now. There was a bunch of people fishing on the Sac. Taylor Bridge looks interesting. I am wishing for a couple kayaks right now, I would be up in all those inlets/outlets right now for shore ! BilletHead and Chief Grey Bear 2
BilletHead Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 I am thinking if the river settles a bit and wind cooperates I may take a jet boat ride up one of those three arms. Please don't throw any rocks at me as I go by and I promise to not make waves for the smaller craft as I do so. Better for us both if I go by on plane.
