sms_alum Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I headed to Destin with my family the first week of June. I have never done an inshore or bay trip and would like to. Plus my nephew has gotten seasick the last 4 years we went snapper fishing. Any recommendations for a guide let me know, thanks.
JestersHK Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Never used a guide service down there, but there are a bunch. Hoepfully someone can recommend. Theres a ton of areas you can surf fish around there. And Okaloosa pier is right there as well. Was down there last year in May and fishing was pretty good. www.pensacolafishingforum.com also usually has a ton of good trip reports on what is biting and where. Good luck and bring us back some pics!
shrapnel Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 My favorite place to fish! Stayed for a month over the winter and slammed the trout, reds and flounder around Destin. In June I would just find the parks and start wading it is very effective. DOA shrimp on jig heads, flukes, small cranks, dead shrimp on bottom rigs are all good and the top water bite for trout and reds can be awesome. You might also hit the tail ens of the Pompano run in the surf in June it is worth a try. Careful it can be addictive...and make you quickly realize how little we have here to fish for. I second the Pensacola Fishing Forum, good group of guys...I'm same username there.
jpb2187 Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 There's a good spot for trout, reds, and I even caught some mackeral right below the Destin Bridge. I would bring some spoons and topwaters and have some fun. You can only walk to the fence leading up to the Coast Gaurd station, but if you wade out you can cast towards the coast gaurd docks where there is a deeper grass flat. Smalliebigs 1
Smalliebigs Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Where jpb2187 suggested is a good area, I have paddled a yak in that area....awesome grass flats all up there to the bridge. The complete key to being successful in the bay or in the surf is to be fishing the tides. So the first thing you must do is get your tide chart when you get there. The jetties hold all kinds of fish and can be accessed on both sides of theEast pass. I have a friend who lives on the East side of the pass and there is a little park you can drive ito called Love park or something? ?? But drive all the way into the lot and walk the quarter mile across the sand and you can walk out to the jetties on the East side. They can be treacherous by foot and when the tide is running it will have a bounty of fish. I usually fish from a yak there but have caught huge Red's, Lady fish galore, Spanish Mackerel, Pompano all on White jigs and Rockport rattlers....go to Bass Pro there. I paid a guide once and he took me to the Jetties and we hammered fish so I have been fishing them ever since. I fish the surf as well but prefer the yak...there are three artificial reefs from the jetties to the Crab Trap with in a mile of the beach....fun stuff. The lakes in crystal beach right bt the Crab Trap and Pampano Joe's hold big Largemouth bring your frog rod....that area has the best fishing ever.....I haven't even mentioned the river fishing up above the base....Shoal bass will haunt you
sms_alum Posted May 2, 2016 Author Posted May 2, 2016 I'm staying less than a mile from Pampano Joes and Crab Trap. Looks like I may be loading up a bass rod as well. Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. Unfortunately I won't be traveling with a kayak but I will get out and do some wade/surf fishing. A buddy of mine recommended Tony Eddins in Pensacola beach for a trip so I think I will try to book him as well. Hopefully I'll have some pictures for you guys in about a month. Thanks again.
sms_alum Posted June 10, 2016 Author Posted June 10, 2016 Sorry guys, nothing to report on the trip. My son had some medical issues the day we were supposed to leave and we ended up spending 5 days in the hospital. He is doing much better now but we are still waiting on several test to see why he developed this version of anemia at such a young age. Our condo complex was nice enough to cancel our trip and move the already paid funds to next year on the same dates. Hopefully I can get him out in the boat once he gets the clear from the doctor.
