I am still fairly new to fly fishing and especially fishing Crane. Any success I have had at Crane has been on nymphs. As a novice I usually fish under an indicator. The last few guys I have ran into at Crane have been nymphing without an indicator. How many out there go without an indicator and is it much more difficult? I am worried about missing hits. But with these spooky fish I may have more luck.

Skip the indicator. Those fiah are agressive and you wont miss any i promise. I never use one and remember big nymphs will catch big fish down there. Twelve or 14 prince or buggers. Mohair leeches. . . Etc. Ditch the float

I learned to fish without an indicator  because they had  not  been invented at the time I first started fly fishing.

Ive never used one except one time at taney. I prefer contact with the fly probably due to the years of spin fishing before getting into fly fishing. Hopper dropper will work though if you need a float dkman.

Thanks for the input guys. I look forward to working on my skills more and heading back down to Crane.

Dont be afraid to use an indicator. Not saying anything negative about those who don't, but it has become "cool" to not use one. If you aren't excellent, you will catch more with an indicator. I am halfway decent at best, and I fish an indicator. They are popular for a reason (they work). I would love to learn to fish better without them, but I enjoy catching fish to much. Bobbers rock imo.

Only problem with indicator with a newer fly fisher jtram is that they still make wild casts and that float plopping will scatter the mcclouds. Plus that creek is really low right now Which makes it hard enough. not hating on floats just think going to crane you need a stealthy approach.
