Two piece rod.....that's why.

Ease off on the drag and stop going "boom goes the dynamite " on hooksets.  Lol!

Looks like the salt in those tubes is doing a number on that bronze-finish hook. That can't be a good thing. Little things mean a lot most of the time.

I cut one of the guards and bent it like the one in the link.  Going out on sat and I'll see if that makes a difference.

Probably does some but I usually don't rig up until I'm on the water and after a few casts all that salt is gone anyways.

The double wire will button them up better than the loop. You might want to look up how to stupid rig a tube also. Not saying you are stupid, but that is another way to rig one weedless on a no weed guard hook. I never buy fishing rods off the shelf, but am a big fan of Batson & MHX's lower price point blanks.

Stupid rig is how I've fished tubes for the past 3-4 years and it works but it always seemed hard to get hook sets as there's a lot of plastic between the point of the hook and the shank of the hook, hence needing to hard set the hook every time.  It's the main reason why I tried these new wire guard hooks.  Now I can actually hook up with the fish, they just are coming off after 10 seconds or so of fighting them.  Just need to figure out if it's the rod or the hooks because both of those changed at the same time.  I may even get out my lightning rod to try to see what might be the problem.

Dunno, maybe reel down and sweep set to the side at a good angle to the fish? Have the same trouble with fly rod tarpon. Can usually get one to eat the candy, but they usually leave me before they get to the boat. Still fun!
