 In a box of older fishing magazines I acquired today were some copies of Fishing & Hunting Journal The Magazine of the Ozarks Region

Volume 3 Number 4 July/August 1988 has your artwork on the cover and back .The cover is a smallmouth leaping out of the water , the back cover is a green sunfish .

Volume 3 Number 5 September/October 1988 features an article about you written by Robert Montgomery .

 by the way the July/ August issue has an ad on page 105 for 6 issues of Smallmouth Magazine for $12.00 .

 I also have Volume 3 Number 3 May/June 1988 that has an article by Spence Turner about C&R for smallmouth on Ozark streams . It is about a discussion he had with Otto Fajen  on the subject . If Al or anyone else is interested in this edition please PM me .

what might have have made a Masterpiece at one time I  believe you could have  Agnew to paint the animals and had Lilly's buildings and land scape painted into a winter scene by Tomas Kincad. My he rest in pease. In case you never heard of the Name. He was called the Light Painter. I know someone bought a small painting from him many years ago. They keep it locked in a bank vault.

That was a neat magazine.  I had an original subscription and still have all the issues.  Have not looked at them in years but can't bring myself to get rid of them.  The publisher was a fella named Hart.  His dad was Lee Hart who worked for Alcoa.  The company I worked for bought raw materials from them so dealt with Lee on a regular basis. I never met his son but thought he put out a great magazine-too bad it didn't last longer.

Thanks, Norm...I have all those issues already so don't need them, maybe somebody else would be interested.  It was a pretty cool magazine, and I was sad to see it disappear.  But the demographics just didn't work at the time.  It cost too much to produce a slick paper magazine for the number of potential subscribers available.  Like most magazines in that situation, it was difficult for them to sell enough advertising when the advertisers knew that it had interest only to a regional audience.  I can still remember them having a meeting down at Welch Spring of all their writers (and me, an illustrator), in which they told us that they wanted our very best work.  One writer, I believe it was Robert Montgomery, raised his hand and said, "Well, if you want our best work, maybe you should think about paying us more than $400 an article."  But a lot of writers, Robert included, were pretty excited about the magazine and really DID do some great work for it.  The meeting at Welch Spring was an overnight deal, with one full day of fishing.  Wade Bourne, another of the writers, went on a float trip with me from Cedar Grove to Akers, and we caught a bunch of decent smallmouth.  He took pictures of me and later wrote an article about the trip in another outdoor magazine.  I was a little embarrassed because I'd worn some really old and ragged clothes that day, not realizing he was going to be taking pictures of me...I looked like a hillbilly derelict in the pictures.

The publisher was Gary L. Hart, as Dave mentioned.  Editor was Steve Kohler, who wrote an excellent book on the Current and Jacks Fork, "Two Ozark Rivers", with photography by Oliver Schuchard.  Associate Editor was Ron Kruger, who appears here from time to time.  Contributing and field editors included several names that anybody who reads outdoor magazines will recognize, including Larry Dablemont, Charlie Farmer, Robert Montgomery, Joel Vance, Wade Bourne, Monte Burch, Jim Spencer, and of course Spence Turner.  Terry Martin, who did the first competitive MO Trout Stamp design (I didn't enter the competition until the second year, when I won it the first time), was listed as illustrator, though I did a couple of covers for them.  The magazine was published and printed in St. Louis.

Looking through the July/August 1986 issue, in which I did the front and back covers, I found a lot of interesting advertising.  Reading's Fly Shop near Bennett Spring had a small ad.  Blue Hole Canoes.  P&S Sales from North Carolina advertised a "famous fedora".  Phil's ad said "Excellent trout fishing and the grand slam package (Taneycomo, Table Rock, and Bull Shoals all in three days), and was on the same page with Lindsey's Rainbow Resort on the Little Red and Sterett Creek Resort on Truman.  Other resorts included Meramec State Park Lodge and Canoe Rental, Vogels Motel at Bennett Springs, Chaonia Landing on Wappapello, Lighthouse Harbor on Pomme de Terre, and the Pere Marquette Cabins in Baldwin Michigan (I stayed there one time).  At that point, they were trying to make the magazine work without a lot of large ads, and these were all little classified type ads.  Later they realized they'd have to sell more and more expensive ads to survive, and it got to looking more like a regular magazine with full page ads here and there, but in this issue it was 82 pages with very little space taken up by advertising.  The articles in this particular issue would have been loved by all here...they included "Stream Smallies" by Robert Montgomery, "On the Rocks" (about gravel bar camping), by Joel Vance, "The Case for Leaky Creeks" (about losing stream geology and how it relates to trout fishing in the Ozarks), by the late Chuck Tryon and his wife Sharon, "An Eye for Order" (a photo essay by Oliver Schuchard), "The Right Canoe", by Steve Kohler, and "The Ozark Memories of Swiney Rayfield", by Ron Kruger.
