Don't know if it's the same for river smallies, but I target them with 7" and larger glide baits and wake baits in lakes and even small ones are not shy about smashing them. I'd probably toss a Bull Shad for those river smallies though.

I'm all for finesse when it's what gets them to bite but most of the time river Bass guys piddle around with tiny little panfish baits too often.

Definitely agree! I think you can go too small as much as too big. Ned rig guys aside. Smaller in the winter in clear water, but the smallest I ever use is hair jig and trailer which is about 2.5 inches long. Smallest stuff I use in summer is probably the size of the Sammy 85.

Ive caught lots of smallies on the big spooks but still seem to do better on the medium size ones. Cant stand to throw the small ones.

Watched my brother on the big piney catch a 13" smallie on the bbz 1 rat 50 then shortly after he caught a longear sunfish on the same rat. Not sure what that sunfish was thinking! I think that was the day I saw you gavin down at boiling springs.

Fishing stunk that weekend. Only thing that produced a few was the ned, gills and goggs were fairly active. Would not rate that water as good, last years trip, was better but similar. Buddy and I did allot better further downstream on same weekend.

Ya we really didnt catch a darn thing that weekend either.

Honestly in the 3 times I've fished the big piney it had been extremely poor for me every time. Just bad timing I assume

I think I need to head to the Big Piney and cash in on some of this poor fishing I keep hearing about.
