Ozarks Chillbilly Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Hey guys, my name is Chris. I'm from Branson, MO and recently transferred to Missouri State to pursue a Hospitality Management major. When I'm not up at school, I enjoy going fly fishing. I mostly fish on Taneycomo (wading & by boat depending on water flow). I sometimes fish for bass, but i'm not as good at catching bass compared to trout. I find it interesting and enjoy the never-ending pursuit on catching fish! When the opportunity presents itself, I would like to expand my fly fishing skills and target other species. Saltwater fly fishing looks awesome, we're planning on heading down to Florida this winter and hopefully can pull in some fish on the fly! I've been a 'lurker' on forums and website for a while but i'm happy to find this discussion board. Boat loads of good information and an active and helpful community from what it seems. Not to mention, it's oriented on the area we're from! Thanks for checking this out... See you on the boards and on the river! One of my favorite places to fly fish is wading the beach. It's an interesting place.

That sounds super fun. My knowledge of salt flies is quite limited though. I know that people use 'surf candies' when fishing the beaches. What do you recommend pattern wise for starters? snagged in outlet 3 Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Clouser......Clouser Ozarks Chillbilly 1

Flysmallie Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 However. If you get a bunch of ladyfish coming through then a gurgler can be a whole lot of fun. Or a wiggle minnow. Or a clouser. Did anyone mention clouser yet. Smaller than what you would think.

Hmmm... maybe I should try a clouser minnow? Haha, not sure how I didn't think of it. Legendary pattern, I need to tie some up. As for the ladyfish i'm not sure if they're located where I will be fishing. Particularly the inter-coastal on the gulf-side of Florida, south of Tampa and all that jazz. Would love to hook up on a redfish, but that's more crab patterns and stuff. Live count (10/19/17) : Streamers lost to Taneycomo's Giant Squid = 12
Flysmallie Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Ladyfish are everywhere and are pretty much considered trash fish. But they put up a hell of a fight and aerial display so I still like them. I've never been truly redfish fishing but have caught some off the beach. And that was all on a clouser. Tan and white is a killer. Your biggest point of concern is going to be a leader. Those fish are hard on things. All of them. Ozarks Chillbilly 1

As far as leader goes, I figure most saltwater fish are less sensitive to the size. How would a 9ft 12lb leader do w/ 10ish lb tippet? For general surf fishing purposes. Although if I were, somehow, to hook up a monster that thing would snap like a twig probably. Live count (10/19/17) : Streamers lost to Taneycomo's Giant Squid = 12
