Headed under the dam at around 8 PM. Started with a small pine squirrel sculpin and managed to hook up on the second cast (pic below). Released. Fished for another 2 hours and only had a couple of hits. Finally hooked up again at around 10:30 and I knew it was a better fish (my first Taney Brown?!?!). Got em' within range, reached for my net... pop goes the fly, gone. Still salty about that one. I know there's a small tree in front of the hole I was fishing, so i'm going to blame it on that for personal support haha.

Fun night nonetheless.

Couldn't get a good pic but this guy was a tank

Headed down tomorrow afternoon, should be there after I put everyone to bed for a little taste of what my long weekend will bring.  I break out my 8wt occasionally with visions of Monster Browns roaming after dark.  Reality will probably be Pine Sculpins on the 5wt though.

Had to like the post not just for content or pic, but impressed with an even dozen streamers lost to the giant squid- :) that's dedication!!!!

I find it hard to read the water at night without spooking fish, aside from the massive fish jumping out of the water and occasionally scaring the ____ out of me. I guess it comes with experience.

Let me know how it went!

Wait till a beaver brushes up against you.  Or a Blue Heron squawks about two feet from your head when it flies by.  I always think I'm going to get my head skewered by a heron flying at me at night.

Only fished about 90 min, wiped out releasing a fish and banged my knee and elbow pretty good (Thank to whomever was fishing a lighted indicator just left of the stairs around 930, appreciate your offer to help.  Sorry for the big splash and noise!)

Threw a big manly articulated plum streamer for a while, then giant squid got it.   Switched to small pine Sculpin (6?)   Was just getting ready to switch again when I tried speeding up retrieve   Second cast stripping as fast as I could hooked a nice rainbow,  prob 18" but just guessing.   One of my better fly rod rainbows there.

Only other scouting info to share was a couple spin fisherman were catching some smaller rainbows.  Not sure what exactly they were using though.

Decided to call it a night and save some energy for Silver Dollar city.   6yr old is going to flat wear me out tomorrow I am sure....

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear about the injury causing a short lived trip! Enjoy your time out at steal-your-dollar.

I've almost strictly been dead drifting / stripping in VERY slowly last couple trips so I definitely need to switch it up. Those sz. 6 sculpins seem to consistently be the ticket lately.

I'm hoping to try some leech patterns this weekend too. Thinking about casting really close to the bank and retrieving it parallel to it. Havnt tried that yet.

Cheers

P.s. darn that Giant Squid

If the waters off and you have decent moonlight, try slinging some topwater beetles!  Just hook set on the swirl, but need no generation or really flat water...  Nice job on the night catch!
