Members AlexFish1 Posted December 30, 2017 Members Posted December 30, 2017 Hope this is the right place to post this. Got a new St Croix Premiere rod for christmas 6'6 medium fast. I cant decide what reel size to pair with it. I have decided on a shimano but not sure if I should go with a 2500 or a 3000. Going to be an all around rod for me but mostly used for more finesse bass tactics and rigging and jigging for walleye. Probably also fish some streams for smallies with it. IThanks for the advice btw I mostly use mono line
Dutch Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 I have some St. Croix Avids paired up with Shimano Symmetry and Stradic reels. Both are the 2500 size. They hold as much line as I'll ever need to have on a reel. Some spools have 10# mono and others have 30# braid. Either option works well for me. I tried fluorocarbon but my reels did not like that stiff line. Smalliebigs and AlexFish1 2
Members AlexFish1 Posted December 31, 2017 Author Members Posted December 31, 2017 surprised that the 2500 will hold 10lb mono. If thats the case i will probably get a 2500
MOPanfisher Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 I have a St Croix 6'6" Medium/Light fast action I believe. The 2500 should be about perfect. I did add a balancing weight to mine I like them to balance at my index finger. I got mine to be a walleye/ned/white bass/back up crappie rod. And it does it well. I spooled with some Berkley Nanofil. AlexFish1 1
Members AlexFish1 Posted December 31, 2017 Author Members Posted December 31, 2017 Is there any reel size difference between a 2500 and a 3000 besides the spool size? Looking at a Shimano Sedona fi probably
timinmo Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Often, not always, the only difference between the 2500 and 3000 size is the spool with the 3000 holding more line. The body of the reel is often the same. On several of the Shimanos the 3000 has a faster retrieve ratio. For most fishing I see little use in having more than 100 yards of line but the faster gear ratio maybe appealing. Hog Wally, Basfis and AlexFish1 2 1
SplitG2 Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 I have several 2500’s and bought a 3000 last year to see if there was a difference. I found for me and my SC Premier, the larger spool on the 3000 slaps the line against the rod and prefer the 2500’s. AlexFish1 1
Members AlexFish1 Posted December 31, 2017 Author Members Posted December 31, 2017 I’d prefer to use 10lb mono with it. You think I can get enough line on a 2500?
Dutch Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 You can get way more 10# than you will ever need. I am one of those over the top OCD guys. I like all of my reels to look, act, and feel the same. For that reason I stick with one brand. I also like all of my reels of a particular type to be filled exactly the same. I don't count yardage on line I count handle revolutions (spool wraps). Using 10# mono on my 2500s I do 100 handle revolutions for a fill. I don't know how much line a revolution is but it is way more that I could cast off a tall building. AlexFish1 1
MOPanfisher Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 Since I use braid on everything, I usually buy a 150 yard spool and wind it on first, then splice on some cheap mono and fill the spool to my satisfaction (with braid you don't need it as full). Then I open the bail grab the loose end of the mono and head out into the pasture and loop back, tie the mono on the spool and wind it all back on. I do like most of my reels to be the same also and have most gone to Pfleuger 30's I believe. I even have a couple new in the box I bought when they were on sale for $30 each on black friday. But have other reels also, too many really, if that is possible. AlexFish1 1
