96 CHAMP Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 I found this interesting and I believe explains why at times when I have found shad shallow in 40 + degree water temp that is has been some of my better stringers. https://www.bassmaster.com/greg-hackney/myth-deep-winter-bass-0
Dutch Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 Maybe that explains the success with the A rig in the winter. 96 CHAMP 1
Guest Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 there just comes a time that when water temps get cold enough, the only active bass in the lake will be shallow, and that is because a good sized portion of the bait fish have also moved up shallower. in cold enough water temps, those bait fish will also die from the cold water temps. they make a very easy feeding opportunity for the bass and crappie. the bass that have remained out deeper always seem to just go dormant, at least they are for me. i have tried, without success, to catch these deep bass for a lot of decades. bass instinctively move to shallower water depths also because of the longer amounts of daylight, and the spawning urge begins to kick in. this will trigger a migration to shallower depths. i believe that i discussed this in a thread a couple of weeks ago. bo abkeenan, Champ188, Mitch f and 1 other 3 1
