An interesting article i read last night was about the Forhan wrap for single footed eyes, looks like it gives the eye more support.

Gavin not really any more wrap or epoxy or thread since you still putting the same amount of eyes on it.

The last 8 or 10 casting rods I have made have been spiral wrapped.

Space your guides as you normally would, but with all guides (except the large stripper guide near the reel) taped to the underside. Put a bend in the rod as if loaded with a fish. Mark where the line touches the blank. That is the location of your bumper guide. Be sure you place it on the same side as your reel handle so you can lay the rod down.

If you are using a single foot guide, definitely use the Forhan lock wrap. It helps prevent the guide from pulling out from under the wrap.

Once you feel a how a spiral wrap feels on a larger fish, you will want all your other bait casting rods to be spiral wrapped.

I do that Forhan wrap on all of my single foot guides. It is not hard to do and have never had one fail at the wrap. You will bust the blank before the guides pull out.

I apologize in advance if I am high jacking the thread but I built a rather curious rod recently. I had a broken casting rod with a nice handle I wanted to salvage so I removed the butt cap, sawed it off in front of the handle, measured and ordered a new blank that would fit inside the existing handle/blank. It ended up having to be a medium light. I've been fishing with it this last week and it casts small baits beautifully. Really loads up well with a 1/8 or 3/16 oz. jig and zings em out there. I've been fortunate enough to catch some nice LM and whites on it, and although it's a bit wimpy I've had no trouble landing larger fish with it and wish I had been using lighter casting rods in general. Those medium heavy and heavy casting rods aren't all there is.

So far i have built a medium casting rod 6'6" and a light spinning rod 7' (4-8 lbs line) and now im working on a medium heavy 8 foot  crankbait rod as i do use deep crankbaits. The butt end of the MH rod is 5/8" and the tip is 5.5mm and it is a pretty light rod compared to my cherry woods MH rods i have. I just glad i don't have no one to answer too at home....lol

And NO your not highjacking thread.

I got hooked back around Christmas and have completed 4 and working on number 5. I had to promise my better half #5 was for her, but you know I'll be using it at every opportunity. She tells me I'm done for this year and better go use them.

1. MH 7' Mud Hole Kit. Brandon Lester Signature. (However he is.)

2. ML 7' on Existing Handle. CRB Discount Blank

3.and 4. 7' M Crankbait Rods. Rain Shadow Blanks. One to be gifted to a fishing buddy.

5. 7' Medium Spinnning Rod on a MH Blank.

You need to build her a PINK fishing rod..

I'm working on a MHX blank now.

My next build will be on a Rainshadow immortal RX8 blank.

She's not into pink, and if I were to do another build now it had better be Turquoise, with real Turquoise and Silver inlays. Probably have to weave in some flowers too.

Guys I think it is a great hobby.  The fact that you can build a rod the way you want one is the best part.  For me and maybe this does not apply to anyone else, but I am sure I have spent much more money than I would have if I had to buy rods.  You like a short grip go for it, fish out of a canoe and a 7 foot rod does not fit, no problem.  In any case I think I have built somewhere north of 50 and have two in process right now with 2 more blanks waiting.

In any case my suggestion is do not be hyper critical of you work.  In a year or so you will probably look back at some of your early attempts and wish it were better, but you will get there by practice.  Sometimes the best way to learn is to make mistakes and if you are afraid of doing that you will not try new things.  Like a spiral wrap.  The rods I build are certainly not prefect but I strive to make each one better than the last.  If you don't like the results you can always strip it down and start over.  I have blanks on their third iteration.  In any case good building everyone.
