Members wilk816 Posted June 13, 2018 Members Posted June 13, 2018 What’s best for them this time of year? Sliders? Top water? Caught 20 or so of them last year above the dam at Truman throwing sliders and reeling in literally as fast as you could. They were chasing shad so I guess they thought the speed of your reel was a shad swimming away haha
Ranger520vx Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 I caught most of mine this morning on a pop r because I had one tied on from bass fishing. Usually use a tiny torpedo on top because you can work it faster and like you said they wanted it moving fast. Also caught some on a Marabou jig, it had to be moving fast too. They are definitely fun when you find them busting shad like that. The shad they were chasing were tiny only about 1/2" long. Alaskageek 1

I know i have some of those baby shad left over from this spring. My son was killing the crappie with em! Have to say my heart races everytime I look at the pic of the WB breaking!!!! Now newbie questions.... whats a slider?? I'm assuming it some sorta topwater. Pretty sure I know what a torpedo is and know what a popper is. Am I right in going with: If you see them breaking like crazy (like in the photo), try to stay at the edge of them and cast in, but if you see sporadic breaking in a bigger area, troll around and thru it???  Now for the crappie, due you tend to find it better to vertically jig next to/on the trees/stumps/brush piles.... or..... cast at them and and retrieve over/around them..... or both, depending on what gets the fish to bite? Have looked at the 2 week weather forecast, and as much as it can be believed, we should have good weather the first part of our week with some fronts moving in later in the week. If that is in fact the case, am I right in saying that it would be considered hot prefrontal conditions, with little cloud cover that first part of the week? and if so, what effect might that have on the crappie? WB? Hoping to catch you on the water when we're there. Wanted to let you know that during the heat of day, we are usually on the pontoon, swimming and hanging out in a little cove just a few hundred yards to the west of the swim beach that is directly south across the lake from Wheatland Park launch/Galmey cove. Come have a cold one!!

The sliders are "Charlie Brewer Sliders". They are what I use most of the time for Whites/Hybrids etc unless they are hitting top water. But I really enjoy jig fishing compared to lures. Here is a link to his site, he makes all kinds of them now. I use the 3 inch ones in assorted colors. https://www.sliderfishing.com/category.sc?categoryId=23 I'm a huge fan of pearl and chart for bother crappie and whites. Sometimes I will even tear off part of the body for whites if they are chasing shad. Alaskageek 1
Hunter91 Posted June 15, 2018 Author Posted June 15, 2018 I personally cast for crappie 20 ft or less deeper than that I like to vertical jig or stroll. Alaskageek 1
Ranger520vx Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 I tend to do better vertical jigging just drop to the bottom then reel up real slow. Sometimes casting and letting it swing down to the brush pile works good but sure get hung up a lot more. As for the fronts it don't really seem to bother the crappie. Wouldn't think it would bother the wb much either. I know which cove your talking about have to check it out. Haven't been  doing much fishin boat was acting up found out got 2 bad coils waiting on them to get here so can get them put on. Alaskageek 1
Ranger520vx Posted June 18, 2018 Posted June 18, 2018 Brother in law and I went out this morning put in at 5:30 had 2 limits of crappie and white bass but 8:30. Was a great morning crappie using jigs on brush piles and white bass on tiny torpedo they were schooled up big time. Alaskageek and Hunter91 2
