yaknar Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 I got out on the river this weekend. I was have a pretty average day. Caught average size smallmouths, average size goggle eyes, a crappie with a black mark on its head and half of its tail missing, I have only caught about 10 crappies total ever, and a sucker. But I came upon a section with a nice current and a still pool on the other side of it. On the second cast it hit. I had to fight it back through the current while trying not to lose it. A 21 inch walleye makes it a "better day" and keeps my streak alive. I couldn't use anything that ran too deep because I was pulling up to much off the bottom. I was trying a bunch of different lures and ended up keeping a Rebel grasshopper and bumble bee on one rod. I caught a lot of fish with them. The picture of the small smallmouth is to show where I fished so on one needs to ask. The river was low, had to drag a little and it was hot but it was a good day on the river . Released them all....And has any of you kayakers used or seen one of the Bending Branches paddle with the hook retrieval system that’s built into the blade. I have stuck my paddle down in the river plenty of times trying to knock a lure off something. I wonder if this would work and should I try to notch mine. dan hufferd Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 Dude that is a good one ! What a treasure, river walleye, not many have done that in Missouri, even less in a kayak. Be proud ! Daryk Campbell Sr, Bass Yakker and Johnsfolly 3
Johnsfolly Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 Sounds like a great day even if hot. Congrats on a variety of fish. That sucker looks like it might be a black redhorse. That crappie with the black mark is really cool. I heard of them being called blacknose crappie. My buddy has a pond that he stocked with crappie and about half were that strain. Congrats! Seth Clarkson Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 I've been curious about the notched kayak paddles as well. I have seen them help get lures out of trees, but haven't seen or heard much about a lure hung on the bottom. Also, Yaknar what do you catch the sucker/redhorses on? I saw a ton of them on my last float but just assumed it would take a fly, or a live worm to get a bite.

My Ascend paddle is notched and I've been able to retrieve a crankbait off the bottom or out of a rootwad with it. Kind of awkward to use it like that but it works. Bass Yakker and Seth Clarkson 1 1
yaknar Posted July 17, 2018 Author Posted July 17, 2018 Thanks for all the comments. Maybe I'll notch my paddle to see if it can save a couple of lures. Seth, I don't fish for suckers or catfish, but I usually catch them on crankbaits. I don't know why I catch them. Seth Clarkson 1
Jacob McIntosh Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 If that's up where I think it is we have gigged several good messes of suckers from there
Members SGFChief Posted July 25, 2018 Members Posted July 25, 2018 I have a notched bending branches. I've considered taping over mine to keep it from getting tangled up in my line.
yaknar Posted July 26, 2018 Author Posted July 26, 2018 SGFChief , I have not notched my paddle yet.But can you tell me how it gets tangled in your line.
