WALLEYE ?

  Last posts in this forum was in early December. Just to wake everyone up a bit I thought it was time for a post.

Where are the walleye in March-April-May?  Techniques....I don't have any but I am trying a few things out. I've made a few very ugly worm harnesses,  but I really don't like dragging the clothesline behind me. I've caught quite a few walleye up north on jig heads with a leech and sometimes a minnow attached. That doesn't seem to be used much around here from the few things I've read about walleye fishing in this area. Twin Lakes Walleye Club.......sounds interesting but cannot find anything active in these forums or online. Do you have to know the secret word and double-secret handshake? 

I would rather eat a walleye than any fresh water fish I know. At my current rate of knowledge I am likely to starve.

I have not fished Lake Norfolk, but after the fish have rested from their attempt to spawn, mid April to early May, I fish for them on Tablerock in the lower parts of the spawning river/creek, not quite on the main lake. Try a Lindy rig with a minnow or nightcrawler. Start at 10' and work your way out.

Toward the end if th spawn and from about mid crappie spawn for a month or so, don't be afraid to throw crankbaits like shad raps or flicker shad up shallow and around windy points.  At times they will absolutely kill them, and you will be amazed how shallow they can be.  If water up in the bushes a bit, those gaps in the bushes are killer when crank just clears the bushes on the way out.  Also keep a rod handy rigged with a swim bait, if you smiss a strike fire the swim bait right back in there. And you get bonus bass, catfish, drum etc.

 I fished Table Rock last Saturday without much luck. I worked my way up from the Beaver area almost to the dam.  I did see a report in the Table Rock forum of some good luck in the Kings River area over the weekend. I will give them another shot in a couple of weeks either on Norfork or Table Rock.  I'm about a year out from retirement and will split my time between the two lakes and the river. I've been fishing the river in the Calico Rock area for the last 11 years but just venturing out into the lakes since last year.  Lot of water to learn but it sure is fun trying.

The Walleye will be spawning over the next few weeks on Norfork. There are two types of Walleye spawners on Norfork. Some Walleye will run up the major feeder creeks to spawn on or near the first shoal. Other Walleye will spawn on the main lake. Those are the ones we will target when sampling down by the dam. We will be conducting our annual sample on Norfork Lake, next week. We usually sample when the water temperature is between 52 and 55.

If you are interested in fishing for Walleye on Norfork Lake, I would suggest joining the Twin Lakes Walleye Club. They have a big club with lots of members that can flat out catch fish.

Mojorig, I have always heard about lake spawns and river spawners, any idea how successful lake spawners are?

I don't have an answer for that one. However, I would guess they should be successful at some point based off how many spawn in the main lake.
