Members WalleyeHunter1407 Posted May 3, 2019 Members Posted May 3, 2019 I’ve heard of a lot of people having success using keitechs on Beaver, but I haven’t had much success in the little time that I’ve used them. What colors, sizes, and riggings work best? I spend a lot of time trolling crankbaits for walleye and crappie, and am looking to broaden my arsenal.
MoCarp Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Dude it’s not what you use but where you use it a good place to start is bends in the river channels look for ones that get close to shore, near points and flats these are stopping and feeding spots for many species bait on electronics near these areas will have fish under them spend some map time it will be worth it MONKEYS? what monkeys?
chi0082 Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Depends on the water clarity and sky. Clear water and cloudy I use the grey/shad colors. Sunny skies and clear water I use the pearls and whites. Dirtier water I go with the darker hues. But nothing is absolute on beaver. I've had days that color didn't matter, and it was the size that mattered. Then there are days that it's the jighead color that mattered. It all depends, so buy them all.
Quillback Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 I'm partial to a chartreuse jig head for walleye. I like a 1/4 oz with a 3.3 Keitech and I like a short shank hook on the jighead. Dirty Jigs with a 1/0 is my preferred brand. A couple of weeks ago I caught 3 keeper walleye on the Keitech and they were all on points of some kind, and fairly shallow, less than 10 feet. Smaller secondary points back in the coves can hold them too. I like to slow roll them, Keitcehs will swim up as you retrieve them so I'll periodically let them drop to keep them down, and you'll get bites on the drop too. Fun baits to fish, they'll catch just about everything. liphunter 1
Sore Thumbs Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 I’ll add to quillback’s statement. If you use a shorter shank jig head it will give that swimbait a lot more tail action. Longer hooks on jig head restrict that action. Try the 2.8 if you aren’t getting bit on 3.3. I’d stay around the clear end. Try some areas with trees sticking out of the water that are fairly close to the bank. Throw to the bank and work it through the trees on the way back to the boat. Most fish are 20 ft or less right now. Quillback 1
bferg Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 I am a believer that color on the Keitech doesn't matter much. Find something shad like and you will be good. I like the blue pearl and electric shad colors but have caught them on white also. I use a plain ole' lead jig head often and get bit on that just fine. Sometimes I will use a white VCM swimbait jig head I keep 2.8, 3.3 and the 4 inchers all in the boat. I think length is a bigger deal than color. And I completely agree on the shorter shanked hooks! This time of year I like to throw them on long points... If I am fishing bottom SLOW ROLL as Quillback mentioned. At dusk and after sunset you can find some Walleyes that way. Quillback 1
