Ranger520vx Posted August 1, 2019 Author Posted August 1, 2019 That's exactly what tech support at CDI said that thing is screwy. I don't like parts swapping either I want to know what is wrong and why it's being replaced. CDI wants me to send them the stator, pack and timer base so they can see what's going on. fishinwrench 1
1farmer Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 I have a few questions about the two yellow wires. Do they run from the stator to rectifier? You stated one time that they were unhooked from rectifier and another the two yellow stator wires were unhooked and the engine ran both times. How much trouble would it be to replace these two wires? Could they be grounding out somewhere?

The wires themselves probably aren't shorted to ground but it's quite likely (and I'm thinking highly probable) that the charge coils (that the yellow wires are connected to) are becoming shorted to ground once the stator begins to heat up a bit. The insulation on the internal coil windings is nothing but a very thin coating of reasonably heat resistant dip (about the thickness of a coat of spray paint). This is done so that the stator windings can disapate heat and cool down as quickly as possible. A tiny speck of dirt or microscopic sliver of conductive material in that dip during the manufacture of the stator could be the cause of all this BS. In my mind, if everything Ranger520vx has said about his troubleshooting tests is accurate....and I have no reason to believe it isn't...then it just has to be a partially shorted stator winding. I once upon a time had a bad (cracked) flywheel magnet that caused somewhat similar readings, but the fact that this one runs fine with charging system wires disconnected rules that out.
Ranger520vx Posted August 1, 2019 Author Posted August 1, 2019 I'm like you Wrench it does act like something is shorting in the stator. Only difference between the earlier symptoms and the symptoms after installing the new pack is now it won't stay running with the rectifier unhooked. This motor has the magnets made in the flywheel not the glued or bolted in magnets.

If by chance someone hooked up the battery backwards then your new rectifier is probably toast, regardless of what your diode test are showing. But.....that alone should not kill fire to all cylinders and cause the engine to die. I'm just a hillbilly mechanic, but was my thought. Lets just say that I have seen it done and leave it at that😃
Ranger520vx Posted August 15, 2019 Author Posted August 15, 2019 Just got the parts back today. They didn't have a motor to put them on so sounds like they just ran ohms tests on everything. Said everything checked out except the pack was stuck in quick start. Sent new pack and the tech said he was going to send a new stator also said it checked good but thought it looked a little dark on charge coils. He said timer base also checked out. I really think the stator is the problem. Hope to put it back together tomorrow and see what happens.

A "tech" should know that the only thing that can keep QS activated is a bad temp sender. There's no switch inside the Ppack for QS, it either connects to GND through the temp sender (thereby activating QS) or it doesn't. If you disconnect the temp switch then there's no way in hell QS can even exist as a circuit in a Ppack. So him saying that "the Ppack checked ok but it was stuck in QS" makes no sense at all. QS can either not work at all, or it can fail to deactivate because of a bad temp switch. Whatever 🙄 I'm with you on suspecting a bad stator.
Ranger520vx Posted August 15, 2019 Author Posted August 15, 2019 That's what he said. Going to put it back together today and see what happens.
