aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 Decided to put new reeds in the ole girl this winter while it was cold. A fairly easy job turns into a week ordeal. Reeds went in easy, Ordered new gaskets for the Carbs, they arrived broken in half 4 days later. So had to get more gaskets. Got all those installed and tried went to click the throttle linkage back into the little bushing and snappppppppp. Cant believe sport boats in Nixa had one in stock. ITs amazing how much Merc can charge for a tiny little plastic bushing, But at the same time price didnt matter because im going fishing Monday....its been a month snagged in outlet 3 1

When i ordered Reeds from Chris Carson he suggested trying the stuffers out...so of course i did. I lapped the Reed blocks with soapy 220, 400, 600 grit. They are nice and flat
fishinwrench Posted February 16, 2020 Posted February 16, 2020 They work on the theory that pushing the Reed blocks further into the crankcase "takes up space" inside the crankcase, thereby putting the crankcase into a state of vacuum sooner, and actually increasing initial intake vaccum during that split second that the reeds open up. The downside if using synthetic or carbon fiber reeds is that it creates extra stress on the reed petals. And if the motor ever backfires... .or gives a hard snort while cold starting....you may very well split a reed or blow a hole in the fuel pump diaphram. I have stuffed crankcases on some manual start Evinrude 2-cylinder motors to help "wake them up" a bit, but I'm a bit leery on doing it on anything with electric start. It's a volume vs. pressure thing, and to be honest I'm not sure that taking from one and adding to the other is a good idea. As with all performance upgrades there is always a reduction in reliability. Sometimes worth it....but more often not.

Not sure, i was a cocktail to many deep when i did this and took the pic, Next day i took them back apart and did it right lol.

aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted February 16, 2020 Author Posted February 16, 2020 Fired it up on the muffs today for the first time in almost 2 months and it might have been the easiest start up ever, and it even idled without using any throttle. 18 hours ago, fishinwrench said: Drop down a prop size. I have a 23 Tempest on it now and can only run to about 5400 RPM. I put on a spare 21 Trophy i have laying around and it didnt seem to change anything. Maybe i need to try a little smaller 3 blade. What is a safe high RPM i should shoot for?
