Lance34 Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 Got started close to nine and finished about noon Saturday. WT 63-65 and clear clarity. Last week was off for us. Never could get on a pattern. Caught a mess for dinner just not very many. Chalked it up for that post spawn lull. Decided to head down river to fish a post spawn pattern. Got them quick in 28-35 fow ranging in depths from 18 to 22 feet down. Marked a ton of fish averaging at the 20 foot mark. Just below or above. Went along a bluff with pockets. The corner of the pockets is when I would get hammered. Did catch stragglers down the bluff but those pockets got me sitting on the edge of my seat. Had 14 females and one male. Everyone of the females still with eggs. They look like they are reabsorbing them. The color of them looked light tan. More rain next week. Geez Pic below. First from previous trip and the next from yesterday. Also that’s like a 11” crappie belly with 2 shad, my minnow and eggs in it🤣🤣 God bless and good fishing.. Members Greg B. Posted May 10, 2020 Members Posted May 10, 2020 You sure you’re not just posting the same 4 crappie while sitting on a cooler wearing different shirts? just kidding. Nice work. I haven’t been able to get out as I’m having a few back problems. Plan to have that worked out and get back after em next week. Last time I was out I did mark a lot of fish in much deeper water. Must be setting up for a summer pattern I guess. I had trouble getting down to them as I was long lining. Towards the end of my trip I added a bit of weight to a few rods and those rods started catching fish. Learned something there. good luck and keep after em. Greg Lance34 1
Lance34 Posted May 10, 2020 Author Posted May 10, 2020 @TrophyFishR thanks bud @Greg B. yeah I hate fishing that deep. Long lining and cranks it’s a lot of line out to get down that deep to them. Then you have to deal with boat control more and tangles. Smart idea with adding weight. If I can find it I got a long lining jig chart I’ll send if you want. Whenever it gets hot and thermocline sets up they’ll come up. I was using 1/2oz rigs and need to step it up to 1oz rigs to avoid the sway. Can tell bites a lot better too. Hope the back comes around for you Johnsfolly 1
Members Greg B. Posted May 10, 2020 Members Posted May 10, 2020 Thanks, Lance. The chart would certainly be nice. I’m making my own but anything helps. Last weekend I was running 1/8 jigs plus a split shot and getting down 15-18 feet with boat at about .8 mph. Normally my 1/8 jigs alone run 10-12 and down to 15 if I let out enough line. so the split shot helped a bit. A lot of the fish I found that day were on deep brush so I had to stay above them anyway to keep out of the trees. I’m enjoying the learning curve. Lance34 1
Lance34 Posted May 11, 2020 Author Posted May 11, 2020 @Greg B. it’s kind of blurry just zoom in to see it clearly EzFishN 1
Members EzFishN Posted May 12, 2020 Members Posted May 12, 2020 Another good option is Flicker Minnows. I like the Black Silver, Size 11. They run 20-25 ft deep without needing to let a lot of line out, and slow trolling at 1mph. I've had good luck trolling these when they are still the in the creek channels. https://www.berkley-fishing.com/berkley-bait-hard-bait-berkley-flicker/berkley-flicker-minnow/1347816.html I've caught everything from crappie, walleye, bass, and more. Johnsfolly Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Congrats on figuring out those post-spawn (or attempted spawn) crappie. Great report! Lance34 1

I definitely need to try that, especially where walleye might be on the menu.
