Correct me if I'm wrong--I love the site for this-- I've seen quite a few older Evinrudes that end in an 8, as is 48 or 58.  I'm thinking that these are base models--like the 48 would normally be a 50 hp, but it lacks trim and tilt and maybe something else.  Is that correct?

Since T&T is important where I'll be doing a lot of my fishing, I would like to know.

Thanks in advance.

OMC made a line of 28spl, 48spl, and 88spl models that were base models (20" shaft and intended for Commercial fleet use. No tiller option) but they ended up being scarfed up by dealers selling "budget boats".

The 48 and 88 could be bought with tilt/trim but were only available in 2 or 4 cylinder crossflow 20" shaft units..... and have a more robust charging system (16-20amp vs. 9-12amp on the stock 30-50-90 hp models).

Detuned ever so slightly to avoid detonation and overheating with crappy or contaminated fuel.....which was very common at that time.    Originally designed to run a 100:1 oil ratio (vs. 50:1 on standard models)

They are genuine workhorses.

They are all still out there, either still running.....or capable of running.

You'd have to try really hard to blow one up.

Parts are still available, and reasonably priced. 👍

Thanks, Wrench.  Did some looking after I posted this morning, and now I'm wondering if it wouldn't be cheaper to buy a used motor to replace the one without T&T.

I need to get my old boat to you so that I (meaning you) can get it ready to sell.

Welp, to drag up this issue again, I just looked at a really clean, almost virginal Lowe boat that has a Johnson 25 on it. There are only two problems: the motor died on the guy the last time he had it out and it lacks trim and tilt. I feel I need T&T for some of the flats-type fishing I do. I imagine the motor has the ability to run on that setting that is halfway up-- but still, T&T would be desirable. While I might opt for replacing the motor, assuming I or Wrench could find a good 25-40 Johnsonrude, this motor looks like it came out of the showroom (as does the boat).

Assuming the guy can get the motor running again--he's checking with his buddy about it-- are we talking $1K to put on a trim unit?
