oneshot 1 Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 I'm dealing with drought conditions and I'm thinking mulch. I have just about used everything but seem to like Straw over because it will let moisture through and still hold it. Open for thoughts? oneshot
Dutch Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 What are you mulching? I quit using straw because of all of the seed germination that I had to deal with. I switched to grass and leaf compost. It covers well, absorbs moisture and puts a slow release nitrogen in the soil. I buy it 2 yards at a time and store it in a bin that holds 5 yards. oneshot 1 Posted September 27, 2022 Author Posted September 27, 2022 I'm wanting to mulch Fruit Trees and Berries. Where do you get your mulch is it already bagged? Got to haul it in my SUV. Get my stuff at Lowes and MFA. oneshot
Dutch Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 No it isn’t bagged. It is just dumped into my farm truck bed. I pay $20/cu yd.
oneshot 1 Posted September 28, 2022 Author Posted September 28, 2022 HMM! All I have is my car. oneshot
oneshot 1 Posted September 28, 2022 Author Posted September 28, 2022 If I can find it I could get someone to haul it. This year I was using Leaves, Cardboard and Carpet. Leaves were the worst. oneshot

If it is you might even be able to get it in 5 gallon buckets and haul them in your car.
MOPanfisher Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 My opinion if the fruit trees are more than a few yrs old then do not mulch them. The roots are deep enough you are really gaining anything and rats mice etc like to live in that mulch layer and have been known to eat the bark and girdle the trees. The one benefit I can see from.some kind of mulch around trees is not having to mow too close to them. Mulching in a garden is completely different. Terrierman 1
Dutch Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 I have never seen vermin in any compost. I don’t use any other kind.
oneshot 1 Posted September 29, 2022 Author Posted September 29, 2022 I don't think Lebanon has that kind of place most goes to Springfield. I know our trash does. oneshot
