I'm dealing with drought conditions and I'm thinking mulch.

I have just about used everything but seem to like Straw over because it will let moisture through and still hold it.

Open for thoughts?

What are you mulching?  I quit using straw because of all of the seed germination that I had to deal with.  I switched to grass and leaf compost.  It covers well, absorbs moisture and puts a slow release nitrogen in the soil.  I buy it 2 yards at a time and store it in a bin that holds 5 yards.

I'm wanting to mulch Fruit Trees and Berries.

Where do you get your mulch is it already bagged? Got to haul it in my SUV.

Get my stuff at Lowes and MFA.

No it isn’t bagged.  It is just dumped into my farm truck bed.  I pay $20/cu yd.

If I can find it I could get someone to haul it.

This year I was using  Leaves, Cardboard and Carpet.

Leaves were the worst.

Lebanon probably has a yard waste recycling center.  You might be able to get it there.  It might even be free.  If it is you might even be able to get it in 5 gallon buckets and haul them in your car.

My opinion if the fruit trees are more than a few yrs old then do not mulch them.  The roots are deep enough you are really gaining anything and rats mice etc like to live in that mulch layer and have been known to eat the bark and girdle the trees.  The one benefit I can see from.some kind of mulch around trees is not having to mow too close to them.  Mulching in a garden is completely different.

I have never seen vermin in any compost.  I don’t use any other kind.
