In NE Oregon is the Wenaha wilderness area with the Wenaha River, tributary to Grande Ronde, flowing right through. Beautiful Western stream in an incredible setting; it's an epic multi-day backpack. Extremely healthy C&R bull trout population in the river with big fish. Filled with native Redband trout and mountain whitefish as well.

Hope to make it back here someday soon.

Tight lines--Also fun fact, there are bull trout all the way into NE Nevada

The best Bull Trout fishing I ever had was below Crystal mountain in WA.  There is a bridge on the way to the resort.  I was skiing the last of the season and visiting friends one spring.  The water below the bridge was  classic swift with huge boulders.  The river was loaded with 3-6 lb Bull Trout.  I caught dozens in 3 days.   I quit fishing when I went into  the convenience store downhill from the bridge to get some more lures.  I asked the lady behind the counter why no one was fishing this crazy good river.  She explained the rocky flat I was traversing was a favorite dumping ground for the Green River Killer.  Had the place to myself.   The only other place I caught any numbers was the Flathead drainage.  I think they are protected now.  I  could never tell the difference from a Char a Bull Trout and a Dolly.  I think they were just a hold over from the glacier period.  Awesome quest though.

I used to fish the Green river in WA, dunno if that was where you were, but that was indeed the river the Green river killer was named after.  It never made a dent in how many people fished that river however, it used to be a great winter and summer run steelhead fishery.

Great information so far. The Wenaha looks like a great place to start. Its a looks like a good size river, in difficult access, away from people.

Thanks for the tips so far.

Since the anadromous version of that fish is "Dolly Varden"; if there are steelhead in the Green[ the char are most likely Dolly Varden rather than "Bull Trout" which are the non-coastal/non-migratory version. Unless of course it happened before 1970 when identical fish became two species.
