Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 23, 2007 Root Admin Share Posted August 23, 2007 How is the population this year? I usually go to SE Kansas but I doubt if I go this season. I may go closer to home if I find a place but am not counting on it. It's on a Saturday- holiday weekend- and we'll be busy. Plus there will be a bunch of hunters out. I prefer to go later in the season when the birds come down from the north.
Dutch
We used to dove hunt a lot but all the farmers quit putting out grain crops and went to grass so I quit because they aren't that good to eat (unless you like the taste of liver).
Quillback
Seems to be mostly pay to play in this corner of Arkansas. Not worth it ot me.
Members Morgan F.
We put out about 50-60 acres of sunflowers and vaious other seed mix every year...didn't turn out too bad this year, but so far there just hasn't been the weather to push the birds down as Lilly mentioned. We have some weather pushing through Central Mo today so hopefully we will have a few birds come in for the weekend. Went out and counted birds sitting around the plot earlier this week and there were around 20-30 (not a lot). Typical years we will have birds in the 100's range...come on weather! Morgan F. Don
I'll have my MOJO dove spinning at the end of my driveway with a couple of decoys on the barbed wire fence. I'll step outside every now and then and blast a few. I hope my daughters want to shoot with me. We'll marinate the breasts in soy and worcestershire, wrap them in bacon, and grill them. Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
snagged in outlet 3
I couldn't go this morning and it's one of the first dove openers I've missed in years. We hunt the river bottoms near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers just north of St. Charles. The boys called about 6:45 and one already his limit. We scouted it every week and didn't see many birds but my buddy said it was loaded as usual this morning. We hunt over sunflowers. Man, I wish I could've gone! Last year we never got a migration of birds that stopped. In years past you could go back out a couple weeks later and there would be birds everywhere again. Marinate in Zesty Italian dressing, wrap in bacon and grill em up on the weber. I heard the other guys in the background shouting kill em and grill em. Terry Beeson
Took my gun with me to the farm in Arkansas, but didn't fire a shot at a dove. Saw 5 this afternoon, but from the front porch of the house... It's so dry down there the doves just are not active. But I did get to see a few "animals" that made my neck start to swell up and fan my tail feathers... if you get my drift.... Bow season, here we come!!!! I saw several throughout the day while mowing, but none came to my decoys. Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
