Trip report: Poor fishing

I did not "drift" my panfish 16 with 3 people in it across the shoals.  I got it up on plane and skinny and I was down on lower end after all the springs and Frederick Creek dropped in.

Like he said, it was tricky in a canoe up in trout waters.

Our new local buddy Jim told us they have been stocking regularly, so who knows?  I wondered beforehand if MDC was stocking due to low water and hot temps this summer.

I asked Jim what was going on with Eleven Point State Park. He said it was discovered that MDC can only own so much land (I believe he said per county) and now they are over the limit, and MDC is going to have to sell it. Anyone know if that's true?? I know the locals want to keep their little slice of heaven just like it is but I sure wish there were a few more drive up campgrounds. As poor as Oregon County is you would think people would want some development for jobs and tourism tax dollars. But as Jim said when we were talking about that, it practically takes an act of Congress to do anything along the federally protected area. And Greer Campground had electric for RVs once upon a time and the boxes kept getting stripped for wire and destroyed.

Love how the locals still call it Pig Ranch!!

Pigmans used to own it and hosted the Beatles there for a layover.  It's a State Park, not MDC.  River Hills Traveller had an article on it, lawsuits were won by State, the Nixon folley will progress into another Eagle Bluff if I guess right.  Ruin the whole wilderness.

I hope the fishing improves by the end of the month. We are going to float from Greer to Hwy 142 Sept. 25-28. Driving from Tulsa so we won't get on the river until 11 or 12, so Monday will be a short day and then camp somewhere on the river. Tuesday and Wednesday will be longer days and we plan on camping a couple mile down river from Hwy 160 bridge. Then float the rest on Thursday and load up and drive home. With the river being down we should be able to find better gravel bars to camp on. I know the water is down some but I floated the lower Buffalo Aug. 14-16 and had to get out and drag our kayaks through the shallows. Now the water is lower and I think it would be tougher. Fishing couldn't be any worse because the Buffalo was low, clear and slow and the fish were spooky and picky.

That bend below 160 has lots of new timber in it. Be careful. Nice place to camp.
