A quick internet search lead me down the rabbit hole, and I came across one site where one guy wrapped 2mm foam around the hook before he glued on the outer foam on h is crease flies. Since he over wrapped the foam around the hook with thread, I'm not sure it added any flotation.  Will have to play with it when I start on the crease flies.

JFTR too much foam, or too light/small of a hook, will cause it to float sideways.   It takes a little experimenting to get them right.....but not too much.

I made some crease fly streamers, you folded a piece of weighted flash tape over a hook in a minnow shape and it made a flashy spoon sort of fly.  I don't think I ever caught a fish with it, but it was a thing to sell fly material one time years past and I made some.

Looking at this one, you make the fold high and air trapped or foam balances this one out with the tailing material.  Wrench has alot of time on his hands to experiment.  But I like the way it looks, probably casts well because it is lighter than a popper of that size.

When Bill Butts and I fished together he mentioned fishing a crease fly with a sink-tip line.....so I had to try it.    The action of that fly sub-surface is really cool, but the concept just seemed like sacrelige to me, so I never stuck with it long enough to make it happen.    No doubt that it would/could though.

I think the saltwater guys do it frequently.

For me, beings as how it's a dead ringer for a shad..... it's strictly a top water offering.  With a little practice, and a well balanced fly, you can make it "spook-walk" side-to-side and pop (spit water)......It really is a killer.
