I am prepping a spot for my turnips. Been raining here lately and I am not complaining about it. Haven't been able to till it up yet. Next will come a winter wheat/turnip/oats patch to create the killing field for my wife.

Mix up a cup.or.less.of Epsom salt in a gallon or two of water and give the peppers a cup of the mixture every day till you run out. Will really help them set peppers.

Dang, now I wish I had a preying Mantis to feed them too. Last year I had dill planted in the same cold frame as my tomato plants, had them.on both dill and tomatoes. Haven't been as bad this year for whatever reason.

Reck on Wrench's new truck could pull a 16 foot trailer with 3 foot sides loaded with bow shot carp, across a ditch 12 inches deep and 24 inches wide, during a gentle rain. On level ground of course, up a hill would just be silly.

Super clear water is seldom if ever the most fertile. Nobody claimed a sechi reading was particularly useful, just one of many type of readings taken. A fish fry that brought people out to hear about how important water quality is and how to protect it would certainly not be bad thing.

You can get some serious calluses that way. Heck things are moving too fast any more. Flush toilets, water IN the house, whats next cook stoves that don't need wood?

I have taught my wife to grab the overhead handle and jump/slide/roll in. I point out that if our 4 year old grandson can climb in surely she can. Have had to pack a small folding stool a time or two to take my mom to Dr. Etc. The one thing running boards are goof for is to get a good mud smear on your pants leg when getting out after driving wet muddy roads.

It is simply a reading taken a a single point in time at a specific location. The instrument provides the most consistent results in sunny, midday, calm water conditions off the shaded side of a boat or dock to minimize reflection off the water. Secchi depth corresponds to the depth at which approximately 10% of the surface light remains (Wetzel, 1983).

I am with ya on this one Wrench. Dealer couldn't believe I didn't want running boards on my truck.

More Flip Pallot and him getting hooked on the Golden Ghost

Catching carp = fun. Watching other people catch carp not so much. -
Sechi disk readings are just one of the multitude of measurements that can be taken. Doesn't require much equipment or skill to use and gets the public involved in and this king about water quality, both good things.

Nope, have stomped many of them. Used to use catalog worms but worked well for me. Can't imagine any fish would want a worm that tasted like tomato leaves.

Well that is just terrible advice. The feral hogs were established to help eat rattlesnakes, so that is the populations to target. Or maybe not if the hogs have eaten them all. Could go either way I guess.

What is or is not legal in Texas or Arkansas or Mississippi etc. have zero bearing on what is legal in MO. I have been a part of enough church fish fry to know that yes there are some posession laws broken. Also they cannot charge for wild caught fish, they can however accept a donation and usually get more $ that way. I know for a fact that a few Agents have made contact with church or civic groups and explained the rules. Often it is guys who trot line for catfish that supply the fish around here. The best deal.I ever made with trout involved a small gas station in Branson where the owner would trade you a fresh made to order roast beef sammich in exchange for 5 little slimers. I ate a few roast beef sammich's when involved worked down there.

Likely similar to what we and others have experienced, combination of lower DO, warmer temps allow some naturally occurring pathogens like bacteria and viruses to stress them to the point they die. Ours was big walleye, hardly any smalls, then after about a week drum, then buffalo. A few other species seen but not in a number that would raise any interest by themselves. I truly hate to see nice walleye floating dead, alost as bad as smallies, yes it's a personal bias. If I remember correctly there is a herpes related virus that kills carp. Every lake just about is going to have occasional fish kills to some extent. Us guys in the middle refer to LOZ (lake of the ozarks) and LOS (lake of the ozarks south, i.e. table rock )

What's considered a big smallmouth vs. a trophy in Missouri?
MOPanfisher replied to Smallmouthmama's topic in Smallmouth Talk
I never cared what anyone else thought about my fish, as long as I am happy with it. -
Back in the "Old Days" every summer there was a big stone crock on the back porch full of cucumbers, garlic, dill, grape leaves and I don't know what else. We had to skim off the scum from the top occasionally. Usually we started sneaking them out after a week or so. Finally mom found a second smaller crock she would put there for us to eat from so she could can up the rest. They were never as good as right out of the crock though.

Oddly enough I have never been caught up in the pounds/ounces of whether or not a fish was big, and especially not if it is a trophy. Smallmouth that I catch that make me think wow that's a good-un are "big fish", ones that I caught with a good friend, during specials times, or some that I only hooked and lost after seeing them smash a lure, jump high early in the morning while camp gear is still waiting to be packed up, etc. Those are trophies. Hell those pics of well marked smallies others post even give me a thrill. -
I used to have a blast standing in a creek with 3/4 weight fly rod and harass the green sunfish, punkinseed and chubs. Always and good time. Sometimes you get surprised when a decent bass or catfish attacks it too.

well looks like the carp anglers are not the only ones
MOPanfisher replied to MoCarp's topic in Throw It Down
I figured you would rise to that bait. I don't ever Rember deep hooking a carp, even when we trot lined for them. I can't say that having muskie has ever had the slightest negative effect on crappie populations, seems to be more about the spawn success. Muskie on the other hand have a negative effect upon my supply of Shad Raps. They have some sort of vendetta against me I think. Truthfully I don't lose a lot of lures to them but every $10 shad rap they takes annoys the stink out of me. One day I will get a legal sized one into the boat and then the shoe will be on the other foot when I eat him. Or at least try. -

Whack a few of them lure stealing water wolves, would save me some money in tackle. Wonder how many non target fish swallow a hook buried in secret carp bait. -
I put that in for FishingWrench. I grew up eating carp and while I won't extol their gastronomic values, they weren't bad. Baked, fried, smoked, and canned. But no I didn't say they were "good".

Not sure about biggest I ever caught but lost one that would sure have like to get my hands on. Fishing a small creek and hooked and maybe 6 in punkinseed, as it came past and deep bank a huge small came out grabbed it and went back in, never even slowed it down. A few seconds later it spit the punkinseed back out. May not have been as big as it seemed but in my mind it has always been as certified monster.
