  1. I always thought it was better than salmon. Have had it canned, pickled, smoked, fried, baked etc. Very rich and sticky, but tasty. I don't think there is a lake around that doesn't have plenty of carp. If memor serves me, we used to trotline over on the river above stockton. Still remember the guy that helped us one year, he ran a hook into his pinky finger and way as the barb. Mom was a RN, and he said, ma'am if you are willing to pull it through I can take it. A pair of pliers, and old pocket knife to cut the skin, and a pale while feller who never made a sound. Wrapped an old hankie around the finger and went back to running lines. Tough old river rat, I suspect his version of tetanus prevention came out of a bottle from kentucky.
  2. Good fresh sweet corn out of the patch is good bait, canned corn works too. Many years ago we used to make dough bait out of wheaten and strawberry jello or occasionally cheap bourbon. When I was a kid we would trotline for carp, with pieces of cottonseed cake and a treble hook on each side of it. By far the most poundage of fish I have ever seen come off of a trotline, and we pressure coozed and canned the meat. We didnt know we was poor we just thought it was good fun and eats.
  3. I only plant leaf lettuce so I don't have an answer for you. I was the last day or two finally able to put the tractor/roto tiller in the gardens and prep them. Have planted a total of 15 tomato plants. Am seriously down in the back right now too. Sure miss that big strapping college boy of mine. Hoping it rains so I get a break before I have to go back out and plant zuchini, yellow squash, cucumbers in the little garden and corn and Cantelouopes in the big one. If it weren't for sweet corn I would turn the big one into a berry patch, might anyway. Have I think 6 surviving thornless blackberries, and considering what to add next there, more blackberries for a row, but have room for more rows befor I even get to the actual garden. Raspberries? Grapes? Am going to plant a wildflower patch in the leftover space for the bees & butterflys. Then turnips in the fall and sometimes winter wheat. Other suggestions, that don't eat up my life taking care of? Things that survive on benign neglect, a little water and sunshine are perfect.
  4. Nooooo flip flops. My wife is in an air cast because of them on Saturday. She drove her standard transmission car as far as urgent care, then I got a friend to give me a ride to springfield to pick her up. I think she just wanted a chauffeur.

    What's Cooking?

I modified my instruction to; "open box, follow instructions" there are several jam varieties listed, that use different amounts of sugar. Last year I combined cherries and strawberries to make some cherry-berry jam.

This raises a valid question. Why do steaks cooked on a open grI'll over a drift wood fire taste so darn good. Is it just the curcumstances. Hungry, tired, good day, friends, sounds of the creek, smell.of he smoke. Don't know for sure why but sure is good eats that way.
  7. Stop it Jason, All the fish have drowned. Will be a couple weeks befor I have much opportunity to try.

    What's Cooking?

Chief, very little. If they have experience it is usually at a nursing home. I agree basic healthy lunches can be made that are good tasting. Many kids are so used to eating out of a can or lunchable type food they truly don't know what to do with cooked food. Our church used to take hams and turkeys to homes we knew didn't have much, we finally quit when we learned that most of it rotted because they had no clue how to cook.it, went to precooked food or gift certificates at local businesses. Dont know what the going wage for a school cafeteria cook at a rural school but I suspect it is right around minimum wage.
  9. Yes, the recovery was made last night.

    What's Cooking?

Since it was mothers day, my wife chose steak on he grill with friends. So 6 Tbones gave it their all on grill, a little salt, pepper grlic powder combo and some heat. Sweet potatoes in the microwave, and corn on the cob. Salad in a bag to go with. Dessert, vanilla ice cream with some strawberries that a couple hours earlier were happily soaking up the may sunshine. Twas a good day. Oh and then had to make another batch of strawberry freezer jam with the rest of the berries.

Our school is 100% free lunches, no one has an option to pay. Some of us asked about paying and the school said no. I for one believe the the federal level should be concerned with assisting states getting funding, grants etc. and not trying to dictate what a school serves. Let the school employees do their job, and if the quality isn't there the school board takes the superintendent to task. Several of the local churches work toh ether to provide backpacks with simple meals in them for students to take home over the wekends. Small town stuff, no clue how things work in a bigger district.
  12. Right niw the lake is 861.2 and dropping. Normally would be at 841this time of year, not sure how much drift is out there but would expect there is a fair amount. Stained water has made it all the way to the dam, and releasing 3500 CFS. Bolivar ramp was in good shape the last time I saw it but haven't seen it since shortly after the lake level peaked.
  13. Trying my best to keep up with my slow, tottering, 84 yr old mom and pick strawberries. I do believe she would fist fight anyone who tried to steal them. Finally got something planted thugh, the lettuce etc. was pulled out of the cold frame and replaced with 2 cherokee purples and a beefmaster, planted a miniature yellow rose to replace a dead one for mom, and still have a black prince and pinksomething tomato plant to set. Maybe, just maybe I will be able to work.my small garden this week, bigger garden no chance yet, corn and Cantelouopes will have to wait some more, but more maters, squash, and cukes are dangerously close to being able to plant. This year my fishing isn't interrupting my gardening, just the rains are.
  14. I love catching carp!

    What's Cooking?

Well I really didon't cook much tonight. After a quick trip to spfld to retrieve my wife from urgent care after she badly sprained it while sitting my grandson, I didn't have time for much. So a Rosemary Garlic rotisserie chicken from walmart, a package of Hawaiian rolls, and a container of deviled egg potato salad later supper was served, and it was good. About that time my 84 yr old mother brought in some strawberries to make freezer jam with. She them stemmed them while we ate but finally I did cook something, basically sugar, water and sure gel. But the results are good all year long.
  17. I still have a whopper popper I bought in 2015 during a period when I couldn't fish. Not sure what color it is or what size, but I do know it has never been used. But by golly I have one.
  18. We were out there until about noon putting employees through a motorboat operator recertification course. Usually don't at Truman but they were silly high and had too many blogs floating around.
  19. Lmt out, did you see a bunch of orange and white buoys and some.crazy guys zooming through them around OT south yesterday morning.
  20. I don't know a third party that would split up the house and Senate so that no party has a clear majority and thus either couldn't pass anything or would have to cooperate to get anything passed wouldn't be the worst thing I could think of.

    What's Cooking?

Chief, looks good even if I don't much like cooked bell peppers. Peas, ehh, they are OK, now good fresh ones, or the ones you eat pod and all l, I can buy a bag of them and snack on them like popcorn. RPS, as usual a tasty looking dish.
  22. JD, I am surprised they let you garden. Top of the list of things I was NOT allowed to even think about was gardening. But treatments vary so much and with different side effects that it might not be even close to the same.
  23. My lettuce is overgrown and about to get pulled and some tomato plants put in their place. The garden I locked the tractor into 4wd and ulled a spring tooth cultivator to dry and dry it enough be able to root till it. Should be able to if I can get a little time before the next rain. Every time I plant tomatoes early they want to be stunted, I end up taking a soup can of triple 13 and working it into the soil around each plant. For a while yiu think nothing is gonna happen then they go freaking nuts, they do like warm weather.
  24. Way more expense will go into the bridge and road work across the southern part of the state.
  25. Fish, don't fish, high water, low water, weekend, holiday, winter whatever. Know what you are getting into, and make your choice. Just be careful regardless of what the conditions are, people get killed or drown in the best of conditions.
