    What's Cooking?

Awesome. the great thing about this thread is the variety. I know I can't do some of the stuff rps does, and sometimes some of the ingredients are an immediate turn off (curry for example) but it gets me to thinking about going a different direction, sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. a mix of personal favorites from everyone, and simple ways to make better quick food for those with an IQ of at least 60 instead of eating out or making a plain sammich. I like simple basic but delicious stuff, but I drool over things like lobster dishes, or fresh seafood someone brings back from the gulf. this is the longest running and most useful thread around.

    What's Cooking?

Gourmet lunch. 2 slices of wonder bread with some butter like stuff on it, honey mustard, couple slices of havarti cheese, a goodly amount of Cajun chicken shavings, a few minutes in a skillet, served with a couple Klausen dill pickle Spears and coca cola with a squirt of lime juice, just because I wanted to feel rich.
  3. I love my Nanofil on light spinning outfits. still.haven't mastered a good knot for a leader, although where and how I fish I would love to have a mono leader as the Nanofil gets a little roughed up and you better be retying it, mono handles the abrasion much better. and high bis all the way, have caught a lot of fish that the only indication was a little tic in the line, as it blows in the wind very easily.
  4. No doubt that the human race has caused more destruction than any other species. I don't ooh and ahh at homes built in nice places, I always think we'll there is another nice piece of property ruined with a house. however I see neither of those things changing anytime soon. Deer will reproduce with 1 or maybe 2 young a year. Hogs will have 2 litters of 4 to 8 a year depending on food availability, much steeper population curve. many things are killed an not eaten, don't see many trpapers eating muskrats, coyotes, or otters. I have shot deer that were obviously diseased and sick, didnt eat them either. the main reason for not providing them to people when trapped has more to do with avoiding litigation should the one in a thousand chance that someone contracts anything after being given a feral hog, and decides to sue. the trapping efforts I have helped with took place in July or August, way back in the middle of nowhere, hot, and muggy to say the least. By the time you get to them they have been in the trap for several hours and have it stomped into a quagmire of mud and pig poop with it all over them. kill them, get them loaded into something to get them out, stop at a car wash to clean them up, then to a place where you can process them. By the time you get to that 5th or 6th one they have been dead awhile. I am not even sure if most meat processors will take them, when doing deer they basically have to shut down decontaminate their equipment, process deer and then decontaminate again before they can go back to pork or beef. I would suspect there might be some regulations on mixing a feral hog with domestic but honestly don't know. I am NOT criticizing you at all, just trying explain some of the whys. As you stated the damage is not as bad in MO as in other states but you can see the beginnings of it, maybe trapping can stop it before it gets that far. I do advocate a mixed approach to the eradication of feral hoga, trapping, tracking, aerial shooting AND use of dogs to get the remaining ones after trapping. I do like the idea of being able to take a pig while hunting but am not willing to accept the damage they do just so I can have an option to harvest one.
  5. Man you take a couple days off to catch some fish, come down with a sinus cold during that time, have to sleep in a recliner while coughing yourself silly. thinking at least I have a couple days to rest. Negative, just before 7 am I hear my wife's .243 bark one time, I know what that means. Big bodied mature 7 pt, she waited for one of the other deer to give her a chance to tag out but didn't happen. text said, please come get deer, I have a hair appointment in a couple hours. now I have to go skin and debone him since it's not gonna be cold, and she still.has another tag! Sleep is over rated.
  6. Back in a cove. water toward the main lake was murky, cleared up 3/4 back, wind Saturday was hitting a small bluff at an angle where we caught a few, including the walleye, at the end it was hitting a small point and rolling on down and back into a cove, the area was absolutely loaded with shad. the point and 4p yards or so either way were solid gold. most fish hit right at the bank, as in drop the jig on dry land and slip it back in, usually within 2 or 4 feet of bank. Some just ticked it like a crappie and some tried to rip the rod out of your hand. the few larger ones seemed to hit about half way back to boat or a couple hit right at the boat, scare you half to death as they slam it as you are about to lift it out of the water. thought maybe rattle traps would rule too but nothing on them. Thursday was late afternoon, Friday it was mid morning.

    What's Cooking?

I like my egg sammich to have a slice of cheese. the last one I made a added a couple slices of braunschweiger to it, upped the lowly egg sammie a few points.
  8. The fact remains hunting/shooting feral hogs on sight was legal for several years, it was even encouraged in at least a couple printed formats, the deer/turkey regs book and the conaervationist. and the populations certainly weren't wiped out by hunters. the whole bury/dispose of thing has already been explained.
  9. Well I will hit a few of the points. Yes any Government agency CAN sell land, with congressional approval. (I have yet to know of a successful attempt, but it does happen on occasion I am sure.) As for leasing, if agencies were not able to lease property out there would be marinas or resorts on COE lakes, no farmers planting crops on Gov properties, no MDC doing wildlife mgt on federal property.etc. the monies go back to the schools (75%) in the county the land is leased in. the remaining usually goes back to the US treasury , not back to the agency because only congress can appropriate money, and keeping the monies collected would violate that congressional "power of the purse". the reason the trapped hogs get buried has already been covered. Don't think anyone doubts the deliciousness of pork, easy to hunt negative on that one. Hog calls are out there, Google is your friend. the rest has been covered enough.
  10. Well today was a repeat of yesterday, with one other buddy who couldn't make it yesterday. No bonus wally today, just 31 more white/hybrids. a couple of good ones. wind had switched but was actually hitting the bank better. we were doubled and occasionally tripled up almost had a quadruple once. that area dried up and we picked up a few more scattered ones and was back home by dark. kept enough for a good cajun fish grilling and sent the rest with my buddies. White, chartreuse didn't matter mostly Bobby Garland baby shads, as long as it was right up against the bank it was golden. Even had some leftovers for lunch, had grilled a 5lb pork loin last night, ribbed down with Famous Daves rib rub, and basted with coke, soy and a little liquid smoke, came off the grill perfect, and made a wonderful lunch on the water. Friends, fish, food, good times fellers, good times. now my wife can go shoOT some deer tomorrow while I sit in the recliner coughing and hacking, listenine for her rifle shot and thinking about the drag screaming as I tried to turn the biggest hybrid back toward the boat. also had a few of what appeared to be pure strilers, long lean with solid lines and fought like they were 3 times their size. Are there pure stripers stocked in LOZ?
  11. Well crappie fishing was pretty lame but did find some whites/hybrids and a bonus 20 inch walleye. 3 of us and I think there were 3 crappie and the walleye, and 28 white/hybrids.
  12. Feral hogs do carry more diseases than wild animals, and yes many of them are buried. MDC doesn't want the liability of someone contracting a disease or claiming they did, no do they want the cost of processing them, if a commercial slaughterhouse would even take them. If you kill one on private property you can make you own decision whether to keep it or not, personally if it was a healthy hog I would process it myself. But remember E. coli will kill you or make you think you are dying.
  13. I Actually Read The Caption In His Vice From Men In Black.
  14. If they follow the same plan they did in North Missouri positive results would mean the killing of a lot of deer within a certain zone around the infected area. Honestly I don't know how well it worked, As for things like didymo, aside from outlawing felt soled boots and providing boot sanitizing stations what else can they do, realistically. Much talk about check stations for boats to prevent transfer of critters like zebra mussels to other lakes like some do out west, where often there is only one way in or out. Imagine trying to do that on a Table Rock with the tremendous number of accesses. Sometimes there is only so much you can do, and anything more is simply throwing money away for little gain, the trick is knowing/finding that point. Usually found by crossing over a little. I would love to see MDC put forth more money, effort and planning on some of the more remote access points on Truman for example. Some are simply a hazard to launch from, but not enough squeaky wheels. I would like to see a program to cost share the construction of small (less than an acre) ponds on private property, knowing that each of those things carries its own baggage and cost. some things turn out not to be nearly as bad as feared, Zebra Mussels for example, yes bad, but the lakes that have them have learned to live with it, definitely would cause issues at City Utilities in Spfld, or the various dams in operation, Feral Hogs, not the total destruction some have feared, but then again MDC has been riding them hard trying to eliminate them, and some of the places I have seen have been essentially destroyed. So some of it is due to it not being as bad, some is due to being right or successful in the management strategy. Honey bee Virus, we hear about it in spits and spurts, but has the potential to be devastating to many crops, but no one seems to know the answer just yet, but many are working on it.
  15. I know that some things are still working in the background with not as much exposure or selected exposure, CWD primarily during the Deer seasons, Hydrilla is one that is going strong, but mostly out of sight of those not involved, zebra mussels are still a concern for some areas more than others, silver and bighead carp, are certainly not forgotten, primarily those are education efforts. Other things like larger $$ projects such as adding an access to a river, or enlarging/improving an existing access take time to work through the system, and usually have to be requested/planned at least 2 years in advance, with partners etc. And that is assuming the $$ are actually there to do the work. Feral livestock has come back to the forefront due to the restriction on hunting on most public property. There will be others as well, that will have a big "entry" and fall off of the front page news and the real work on them will continue in the back ground, without the press involvement.
  16. I don't really disagree with that too much.
  17. FW, what sort of things have been important and then "gone away", and nobody cares any more. I suspect that the things you will mention have been worked and are still being worked, just not in the spotlight anymore. For years hunters were asked to kill every feral pig they saw, period, put it on the ground. How well has that worked toward eradication. having been around both feral and domestic hogs, I will say that hog are certainly not stupid, nor are they the paragon of intelligent thought some give them credit for. They will however become very wary and spooked easily if pressured. In the county where I work, there is no comparison to the number of pigs trapped and the number shot by hunters. The only areas I know of where feral hogs have been eradicated or nearly so are ones where a combination of trapping, radio collaring, and aerial shooting have been used. However some of those techniques don't work well everywhere, especially aerial shooting, lots of trees, ravines, lots of accesses by public, and dense brush make that tough, more open country and the aerial gunners are very effective.
  18. The feral hogs I have eaten were delicious. Most were smoked and as good of eating as I ever had. like most meat it is in the preparation.
  19. I will let you know, sometimes when all the conditions seem to be perfect I get skunked, and when the conditions appear to suck it turn on. Guess the fish don't know all those rules. Whatever way it goes me and my buds will have a good time. We have driven further and caught less before.
  20. Parks are closed or leased not sold. selling of property by coe almost never happens as it requires congressional approval. leases are a normal mode of business and have been for a long time. Marina leases, parks leased to city's or counties, Ag leases to farmers, it is a legal way to utilize the property and provide a service that nobody wants the federal govt involved in. Do you want the govt farming ground, or renting you a boat. Also the monies brought in by those leases, 75 percent are returned to the county in which it takes place, the federal treasury only gets 25 percent. More often than not I find that many of folks dislikes are based on a lack of knowledge, or incorrect information.
  21. For what it's worth, the COE, didnt really care about hunting on COE lands, but in order not o have different rules in same areas MDC asked the COE to cooperate and the COE has. Trapping is way more efficient, however it's not unusual to have one or two of a group not go into the trap. the best approach would be to bait, trap and then put dogs onto the last one or two and then run them down. problem is pigs don't recognize property lines and the dogs don't either, and as far as I know the MDC doesn't have any trained dogs. As for the guys in the boat they would have been, USDA. Dept. of Agriculture, maybe with an MDC person but they seem to like to worm within their agency. As for leasing of COE lands, what specifically are you referring too?
  22. I will be there thurs and friday, looking for crappie but certainly won't urn down some whites and hybrids. Will see what happens.
  23. I have never heard of a great whie going that far up a freshwater river. a quick read of the article seems like it was reported but the sharks were not captured or killed yet. so I am gonna guess they are really bull sharks, but stranger things have been found.

    What's Cooking?

Dang, I though you were going to say "may need help eating this". I finished off some of the last of the fresh produce (well except for turnip greens). Grilled a pork loin, wife made some mashed taters and she found a purple cherokee mater hiding among the jungle of vines, and picked a handull of cherry maters, boy oh boy do they have a good flavor. finished it all with some fried apples and vanilla ice cream. Sadly the apples came from a commercial orchard as my orchard dumped all the apples and hey rotted within a couple weeks, even the Arkansas blacks that usually keep all winter hiding in the crabgrass.
  25. Gentlemen, I have a few buddies who are wanting to come up and crappie fish on LOZ next week. What little I am familiar with is launching at Browns Bend and Fishing either some main lake docks, or the entire Rainey Creek Cove area. There is a resort at the back end, Kellys Landing that another buddy has stayed at before, and would be extremely handy but have been unable to make contact with them, am assuming they are closed for the season. Rather than stay at my house an hour plus away and drive through the love sick and suicidal deer on the highway at night, am looking for a basic place, close to that area, where we can stay, drink a beer, clean fish, and tell stories. Any ideas.
