Bass ain't bad, not much inherent flavor, neednsome seasoning. I seldom keep them anymore unless fishing for a fish fry at work and having trouble catching anything else. Almost all bass I catch anymore is a byproduct of walleye or crappie fishing and at that point I am usually just ticked off its a bass. I couldn't bring myself to fillet a smallie just an ingrained prejudice for me.

Hell just today I took and old one and stripped and cleaned it, then went after the bottom with some 220 grit sandpaper before cleaning it up again and going to the grill with crisco. More than one cast iron skillet has Ben put into a campfire to be burned out,,and more than a few have come through house fires to live again. I admit to not being particularly carefull with my cast iron, they aint delicate. I Use them, happily wash them with a little soap occasionally and reheat and wipe down with vegetable oil, ready to go again.

I have tied Nanofil directly to jigs while crappie fishing. Used it that way for the first few years before going to a leader. Nanofil chafes and abrades quickly against rocks and sticks or even on a fishes mouth. I have when not taking a moment to re tie broken off on a hook set.

Those look good. I have always just used Cristo and put it on the grill so I don't have to deal with the smoke.

I am planing keeping my NanofIL for the same reasons as Ham, and like Ham the next trip to he city may well find me with a spool.of the 832 suffix, unless I weaken and buy another Nanofil.

If you sign an agreement MDC will happily shoot your deer. Remember that culling and reducing the number of deer in a affected area is the only tool they have, even they don't like it but it is the only tool in the box and they don't want to do nothing. In the long run I seriously doubt that culling will have much of an affect due to the nature/biology of the disease. The deer will have to develop some sort of natural immunity.

Buffalo ain't bad, but I kind of like carp. And small depends on definition. Small carp are about 3 to 5 pounds, and I kind of think yOU wrench may be right, they simply spring into existence at that size

Y2K prep, I remember laying is a few hundred rounds of .22 WMR ammo, knowing my neighbor had a bunch of young Holstein steers, figured I would at least eat good. My in laws had a stocked cellar with tons (literally) of food, which several years later we hauled to the dump. Who knew you could buy #10 cans of butter powder or chili powder. I did score some nice barrels I repurposed to trash barrels from it. The summer of 1999 we visited my uncle who worked for IBM, I asked him about Y2K, he said it is the best idea we have ever come up to sell new mainframe computers, nothing is gonna happen and laughed about all the hype.

I am not gonna lie, the idea of steaks or roasts cooked to a perfect rare medium rare and then a quick sear is intriguing, but I doubt if I ever buy one. How hot do they go, could you put say a brisket in one to get to that magical 203 and then sear it on a smoking hot grill? Would have to use a liquid with lots of smoke and spices to add flavor I suppose.

Me and my scotch are not afraid to admit that I had to Google palmered fly. Still not sure but I saw a lot of purty looking trout bugs.

Mitch I think you set a trap for me! I finally got a few minutes tonight to try the FG. Gotta admit it is without a doubt the prettiest little braid to mono knot I have ever made. I ended up in a back room with my strongest glasses, a head lamp and on reflection a good shot of Scotch to steady my hands would have been a good idea. I really needed an extra hand or at least some more fingers. The first couple times I dropped the whole darn thing, the first actual not I hadn't gotten the mono snuggled down and had a loop in the half hitch some how. But the last one was a beauty. Hopefully I will get a chance to test it soon.

What's a Ned Rig? My guess on Number 1 killer of bass is the occasional fishermen who catch a fish and throw it in a live well or more likely on a stringer until it dies or if hangong from a dock a turtle or otter eats it.
-
99% of the crappoe I have caught have been using a Palomar knot. But I am always open to try something else. Now all I need is the opportunity. May need someone to help me haul all of the crappie that are going to mob me.

Very true. After chemo and the transplant I wasn't allowed to do anything outdoors for the 6 months, talk about a drop in energy and ability to do stuff. Occasionally I go back to the weight bench for a month or two, but something always happens and I miss a day and poof it's a month before I think of it again. Daily chemo.pill still zaps the stamina but as long as I am not in a hurry I can do fairly well on "field trips".
-
Thanks I will look at the double albright also.
-
Dang, I feel like a loser now. I couldn't do a fifth of jack in a week, or any skoal.

I looked at the videos of the FG, maybe I will look at them again.

This was the one I watched.

Spent the last couple of days expiramenting with knots, trying to find ones I can tie easily, and that don't break easily and work well with Nanofil. First, the mono to jig knot. Have always used a Palomar knot since I was a kid on mono, easy to tie and works well. However lately I have wanted to try loop knots for my crappie jigs, have only found two that qualify as easy to tie and seem to hold well. The Arkansas loop knot which is silly easy to tie, and what I know as the Rapala knot also pretry easy to tie. Both should allow the jig to move more naturally. As if a jig has natural movements. In testing both I was getting breaks at the knot where the mono and Nanofil join so I guess the knots work well enough. Secind, since my splice was breaking I attempted to get a better splice knot. I usually tie an Albright knot and have gotten to where about 3 out of 4 hold and don't break when I give them a hard tug to test it. I have also tried the Alberto with about a 1 in 4 success there, and today was trying a double uni knot. Seemed to work OK after I figured out a couole little tricks of what to tighten when. I did have to give the Nanofil a couple more turns to get it to "set" and not slip and subsequently cut the line. So what am I missing for options, better ones that cold fingers can tie, or preferably without having to dig out a pair of glasses and review it on my phone first. Don't even know yet if I lie a loop knotnto the jig, just more of a day with nothing better to do.

After chemo when the Dr. Was telling all the things I wasn't supposed to do for 6 months he ended it with, if you enjoy doing it, you probably shouldn't be doing it till the end of the restriction period. I mostly followed the advice, toward the end well I opted to do a few of them because somethings just needed to be done and there wasn't anybody else to do them, and it was a very small "up yours" to the Dr. My wife wasn't amused.
-
One of my oncologists was giving me that speech, should only eat red meat maybe once a week, my wife laughed out loud and I quit listening after that. My regular Drs mention it occasionally but don't harp on it, they are a bit chubby too!
-
I remember getting the same advice when I was a kid. Can't remember the last time I had a bone stuck in my throat. Filleting fish is a good thing. Baked carp were pretry good eating, rich and sticky, always particular where we're ate them from, no pond fish. Scale them, cut off head and fins wrap in foil with some onion and lemon slices. Scaling a carp was alway the big job, and they were bloody messy critters to clean. I would still take crappie, walleye or bluegill over them but wasn't nothing wrong with a good baked carp. Canned carp were a whole different thing but not bad either, you could eat them right out of the jar with a fork, or pit them.on crackers etc. We did fry some smallet ones but we're care full to score them well, still ended up with a few bones. If/when silver or Bighead carp appear near me I will probably try one just because.
-
We always just baked them and pulled the bones out as we ate them. Or pressure canned them.

Ranger520vx that is the first time I have heard of anybody catching a blue cat on Pomme. Truman and LOZ are loaded with them. Have seen a few that were channels misidentified but if you say it was I will believe you. There certainly aren't many caught. The crappie in Pomme all drowned in the flood of 2019, only ones left alive are in Stockton, Truman and LOZ.😉
-
If there are any blues in Pomme nobody ever catches them. Channels and Flathead on Pomme. Walleye were doing well but 2 years ago over July 4th Holidays there was a die off near the dam. Th number of big walleye that went belly up would make you cry. Still walleye there and it is regularly stocked with them so they will be around. Right now like every else is crappie time, but there is a lot of people out fishing for them right now also.
